XP update problem

    Greetings......explorer is wanting to go online to update win......i began to reinstall service pack 2 by beginning the download yesterday.....there was no problem and i got half of it when i had to disconnect...............today explorer is wanting to go online via I.E.
    It has been my undering that this is not a good idea and i have always not allowered it to do so...................i have no idea what is going on in terms of port connections, as with service pack 1 i can not get PE to work.......
    any helpful suggestions ?....
