I just wonder why it took so long for you to realise that Avira is the best security solution available :thumb:

I wonder, if you disable all the "guards", essentially making it an on-demand product only, do you still get the context menu (right click) option?

Maybe have only the scheduler service running so that it can auto-update the sigs.

To me, that would be a fantastic (& light) compliment to Sandboxie.

Have they come to their senses and removed the in-your-face ad for the paid version?

I would probably use it if they did.

well maybe spoke to soon. installed finally on my own personal laptop and every time the laptop goes to sleep i get a bsod. seems to be a known issue on searching around without any real solution. so this kinda really sucks. this is a clean system, without any extra programs and fresh win 7 x64 each time it starts to sleep instant bsod and have to manually shut down the system and restart it by pressing the power button down otherwise it is totally non responsive keyboard and all is locked up.

Did you have any other av's installed prior to Avira? I had this happen to me about a year or so ago and it was a driver conflict with a previously installed av.

Does the free version still display ads after each update?

    Yup.

Do a custom install and uncheck everything except the scheduler and the shell integration. I used it exactly the way you describe for ~3 years. With LUA and SRP I only used it to scan files I downloaded and do a scan every couple of weeks. One nice thing is that if you install it this way you don't get any huge red Xs or exclamation points in the GUI saying that you're going to hell on a bobsled because this or that module isn't running.

I scheduled my Avira free to update 5 times per day and I usually get an ad in 2 of those.

Thanks Joxx. It's a full screen or in a maximized window ad?

    Or is it something smaller?

Sometimes it's small, the size of the updater window notifier.
Others it's a large window that takes two thirds of the screen.

I really don't mind those ads, just click close and they're gone. After all it's a free product.

Thanks a ton Johnny! I may just follow suit and do the same thing. Right now I use MBAM Free this way. I have a partition dedicated to downloads, with only 1 folder in it named "Downloads", nice & isolated from everything else. And have Sandboxie check that directory for recovery when I close Firefox. What I do is go into my Sandboxie directory for those downloads before I close FF and right-click/scan them with MBAM to make sure they're clean before closing FF, and the sandbox, and recovering them to my actual downloads partition/folder. It will be nice to have another opinion too, without having to have a real-time AV chewing on my HD.

... but I think I'll wait until this new version is released and matures a bit before I do this. Don't want to install this now only to have to install an entirely new version 2 weeks from now. Because with new major version updates I always like to uninstall the old one and clean up all the leftover junk/defrag before installing the new version.
