Well, I had never used WinPatrol before and since I have heard a lot of good things about WinPatrol and it still supports this 98SE system, I thought I would take Scotty for a walk. Well, story in a nutshell, I was very disappointed, not with the program, but with it's apparent incompatibilities with my particular system! :'( That little dog chased the cat, chewed the furniture and hiked his leg all over everything!

Seriously, in approximately 45 minutes I allowed the program to remain on my system, I had 1 BSOD, 2 other complete system lockups with the only recourse being the reset button on the tower, and the program absolutely refused to allow me to leave my Task Scheduler disabled as I normally do. I usually only enable the Scheduler every other Friday night to run scheduled maintenance and then disable it again on Saturday mornings. Every time I open the interface to WinPatrol, it automatically starts the Task Scheduler. This continued right up to the bitter end even though I set the program to not monitor that particular area.

Now, since the program has had a couple of minor updates, I am thinking about downloading the latest version and trying again. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I don't like to give up, especially on a program that should be a keeper.

My questions, should I be worried about a possible conflict between WinPatrol and SpywareGuard? I also use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and Startup Monitor. I did not get the usual warning from the startup monitor when the Task Scheduler was started(sometimes multiple instances showing in the bar, but only 1 instance actually running-I do know that the icon will appear in some versions of windows when Scotty checks for the list of scheduled tasks). I should add that I had problems even with SpywareGuard, Nod32, and Zone Alarm all disabled(not allowed to start at bootup). Mike's Startup Monitor was not disabled during any of this.

One last question, is there a support forum for WinPatrol, or a forum where the program is regularly discussed and, if so, could someone be so kind as to post a link, please?

    TIA for any replies.
    VV

    LMAO!!! :p :D

Sorry, I use and like WinPatrol, but that was hilarious!!!

There are a few bugs with the latest release that the author has been working on, and that this latest release will hopefully fix. Since this release came pretty quickly, with little to no fanfare, I'm not surprised that there were a few issues that would need to be addressed. But I wouldn't hesitate to try it again, Vietnam Vet....

    Hi JRCATES,

I was reading several of the threads over at CastleCops(thanks again, Ronjor) and even though I didn't see anything like my problem, it is obvious they are serious about this program. Even if I never find a way to get the app to work out on my system, I won't have anything bad to say. And I hope no one takes that little attempt at humor in my previous post too seriously.

I will definitely download the latest and try again as soon as time permits. Thanks for the reply.

For anyone who has downloaded 9.7.0.0 or 9.7.0.1, there has been a new release issued (9.7.0.4) that corrects a few minor issues.

    http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/8287/wp97043fu.png

The "View History" tab that crashed before now works problem free...and some other "identification" type issues were resolved.

But before anyone installs 9.7.0.4, you HAVE TO uninstall any previous versions of WP (you'll get that message during the installation process that previous versions must be removed - I found that one out myself). I figured that this would probably be a good time for me to go ahead and do a very thorough manual cleaning of any left behind files, folders, and registry keys (as well as run my registry cleaners) associated with BillP Studios and WinPatrol. This is NOT necessary, though, because the left behind files and/or folders retain most of the information like history, etc, but I did so just to have as clean of an install as possible.

What I did does make it a lot cleaner in appearance from the GUI standpoint as well. Before, I had half a dozen "Startup" programs that I had disabled but which remained in the Startup Programs tab. Now those are gone.....so I suggest that anyone who might want to have one of their currently disabled SU programs added back as a SU app later to go ahead and enable it before uninstalling the current version (THAT IS - if you delete the files/folders/registry keys, etc., otherwise you won't have to worry about it)

Of course, simply uninstalling from Windows Add/Remove is all that in necessary.....I wanted to be sure to add that!

So far, so good....but for PLUS members just be sure to write down your Name and Reg. Code from the PLUS tab interface before you uninstall in the event that you do a thorough uninstall (deleting remaining files/folders/registry keys) so you can enter it in once you do the installation. Otherwise, it should recognize you just by using Windows to add/remove and then installing 9.7.0.4
