Evidently, Windows wants those files left alone. I would check them again at some future point.

Delete can spell nightmare if all the conditions are right. :)

Right. I gave up on deleting them. I take it how you say. Windows wants to keep them from whatever reason so I won't persuade Windows to delete them. Rather will wait when Windows will decide to delete them.

Just looked at the same problem - the reason is that the files you are trying to delete are hardlinks (look at the file properties) to corresponding files in C:program files.... AND they are loaded drivers (STMicroelectronics 3-Axis Digital Accelerometer) and are therefore open in the OS.

The solution is to stop the drivers.
    To do that:
    Open Device Manager (Control Panel)
    Expand System Devices
Find STMicroelectronics 3-Axis Digital Accelerometer and double-click
    Select the Driver tab
    Click Disable

Now you can remove those pesky hardlink files in windows.old

Go back and click Enable on the STMicroelectronics 3-Axis Digital Accelerometer Drivers tab

    OCD problem gone!

    Hope that helps

Absolutely! :thumb: Thanks! Funny thing is that the two sys files disappeared as soon as I disabled the driver. Then deleting windows.old was an easy task :isay:

does anybody know how to remove a search provider from microsoft edge's search engine list?
it's not the default engine (bing) i'm after, it's those you manually add to that list.
    thanks

In the last few days started to see the desktop icons rearranging their position after a reboot and changing their size. ALL icons are shifted to the left. It's a real pain and apparently it is a well-known "bug" in the Windows OS but I have never seen it before.

Anyone seen this in Win 10 and have a solution?

I have already checked, auto arrange and align to grid are NOT on.

I have a dual monitor setup on Win 10.

@Blackcat That's no an issue for me, as I leave my icons where Windows places them. However, from time to time (well, it's happenend twice now), the icons for my programs pinned to the Start menu get rearranged for no reason, and don't stay in the groups I put them it. This get annoyng when you have pinned 20 programs to the start menu, and taken the time to sperate them in 3 or 4 groups.

If there is no win update to be cleaned the option is missing, as far as I know. I use IObit Uninstaller which has an inbuilt tool that cleans installation remnants including win updates, so I don't have this option in Disk Cleanup.

I don't know if it matters but I have done an upgrade to win 10, not a clean install. Sorry, I have used up all my options. :-(

Mantra if I do an 'ordinary' disk clean up, after it has done the 'calculating' bit Windows updates is not mentioned.

I then click the 'clean up system files' option at the bottom of the window.

It does the 'calculating' and I see Windows updates logs in the progress bar, however it isn't listed in the results.

I then did the extended disk clean up via a cmd prompt.

I see the windows update checkbox listed. I untick the other boxes and just have Win Updates ticked.

It does the 'calculating' I see Win Updates in the progress bar.

The clean up window then closes without any info been given. I then closed the cmd window.

thank you, ron. but that's not what i'm after. i'm looking for a way to remove manually added search providers from the search engines list. although there's an option for that, you just can't remove manually added providers from that list.
i also tried to locate the microsoft edge's profile folder in order to delete it but there's no such folder.
    thanks anyway.
