All updates installed fine on two of my machines but the third one is still sitting at the "Preparing to configure Windows - Don't turn of your computer" screen for about ½ an hour so far.
How long does this (usually / this time) take? It's been running for more than 10 minutes now on my SSD...
Wow, so it's not an isolated thing. Didn't trust Disk Cleanup to finish the job so ran Automatic Maintenance instead--which is at times a very useful utility. After, DC showed only 340 megabytes. Yes me too. Some updates in there were for things like kernel mode drivers, maybe that was the issue.
I've had disk Clean-up take well over half an hour and sometimes longer on my machines. There was no hard drive light activity so I pressed the power button to shutdown. Now it is downloading KB3194798 (Cumulative Update) all over again - downloading is at 0% so far. I guess I'll just have to leave it alone and hope it updates eventually.
Yes, and it's not adding up, it's just showing what's "available" under Windows Update. I just ran the Auto Maintenance, it took about 20 minutes, then ran DC again which seemed more accurate and unaffected. Just ran it again to double-check. These updates are getting a little harrowing, better not mess up the machine, Microsoft.
Two machines on Win 10 have just updated successfully, no problems whatsoever. Actually I also get for Windows Update Cleanup 3.99 TB. Is it safe to proceed with the cleanup? Edit: Thanks plat1098 after running maintenance, reported values were more realistic 450 and 650 MB which were deleted within minutes...
It depends, how well you maintain your PC (I do a manual cleanup/CCleaner/WiseCare). I have a very slow laptop and the restart took 5 minutes (configuring updates and going up to 30%), after the restart, the laptop booted up in about 30 secs, it jumped from 30% to 100% in about 10 secs and the desktop appeared.
I could be wrong but I think @XIII was asking how long Disk Clean-up takes to run after updating Windows.
You right, I have got lost in all that quoting. Disk Clean-up performs a basic component cleanup, so it can take some time, if not done regularly. I have just did a Reset base cleanup and it took almost an hour, disc cleanup took only 30 secs afterwards, there was nothing left to clean.
A bunch of updates today on my Win 10 machine ... KB3194343, KB3193713, KB890830 and KB3194798. Took it quite a long to download and install them all. So far so good. I also had 3,99 TB of Windows Update Clean-up, it lasted a couple of minutes to clean it. I have noticed that while the disk was already idle, the processor was highly busy, so I stopped the clean disk service and rebooted as a precaution. After that no Windows Update Clean-up files were found, i.e. all were cleaned.
Too much wear and tear looking for nonexistent stuff. Better to bypass the affected DC interface altogether. Running Automatic Maintenance took relatively longer but ran as usual and the glitch was gone. Control Panel/Security and Maintenance/Maintenance drop down/Start maintenance. Wonder if CCleaner ran as usual after this update package.
Hi Pegas: If you run Auto Maint. and then look in Task Manager, you see the exe for DC, as well as DISM, Windows Modules Installer, etc. I posted the before and after snips just using Windows Disk Cleanup and AM respectively. CCleaner is great but I don't use it for update package cleanups, just browser junk. Edit: second snip was via Disk Cleanup analyze after running Auto Maint. Sorry, a little confusing.
Yes it runs DC but it doesn't clean system files what Windows Updates are. If you want to remove them you will have to do that via DC. Monthly Windows updates aren't the upgrades hence CCleaner doesn't offer to clean them. CCleaner cleans only the remnant upgrade files, the last was AU.
Hmm, OK. I don't argue with you. Just going by "before and after" and looking at the top-most entries on each tells me Auto Maintenance took care of whatever glitch that was plus other stuff. Snips don't lie. This was a new anomaly for me so going another route was good enough.
