My sentiments exactly. After using Firefox from its inception, I've taken it off my computers. It's obvious that everything computer/internet related is moving this way, but while there's still a choice left, I'll make it.
Yeah I've noticed it too... sad but there are still options out there and plenty of people who feel like me and you.
The thought just occurred to me how back when Television started showing commercials during TV shows. Every body complained. Now we look forward to them during the Superbowl halftime.
Perhaps. Don't get me wrong. I used to watch a lot of TV but after switching to Netflix I don't miss the ads. I don't think I will miss ads in my browser. Once you go ad free, there is no going back.
I try to avoid ads. If they can be turned off then I'll probably continue with firefox. If not, then I'm sure there'll be other options.
I believe you can do so in current releases. We'll have to see what... if any... impediments to that approach are created in future releases. FWIW, another approach (now, and hopefully in the future) would be to set browser.newtab.url to one of your choosing. Which could even be to a local HTML file you've created to have the links/buttons/features you want at your fingertips. No extension necessary. Having said that, I think an extension could probably bring something to the table even in this scenario. An extension can pull off various things that HTML pages can't.
This is what I've done, not for interfering with ads but for convenience. I've even incorporated search boxes. I don't know what I'll do just yet. We'll have to see if this is just a default setting that can be easily defeated or if it will be forced in some way. And, we'll have to see if derivatives like Pale Moon can leave it out (PM strips out telemetry, for example). I use Firefox (well, PM) pretty much because of NoScript. Is there a Chrome equivalent yet?
If someone uses the tiles, then they will pin the tiles that they frequently visit. Only for the first time you will be seeing the ads. Not a big deal at all. And its definitely not a bad idea either because they can make some money from that. I am sure Firefox still respects user privacy. So Firefox FTW !
I voted no. I'd go for Epiphany, or preferably with Seamonkey - provided Seamonkey does not follow Firefox onto ads. Any info about Seamonkey's views on this matter?
More than one for years now. Here's the best, which is arguably better than NoScript: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=356427
I guess that $300 million per year from Google just doesn't get a company as far as it used to. Mozilla is probably just barely getting by these days.
Well, I use Palemoon and dont know if the ads are coming to it, but I probably would continue to use it if it is only ads that shows when a new tab is opened. Only time I use new tab is if I want to copy a URL to it, unless there is some crazy flashing and moving ads they wont bother me the brief time I have the tab open. It doesnt matter for me if it is ads or previously visited sites that shows on an empty tab.. if Mozilla gets money for this - no problem.
Here's Mozilla's explanation about the AD thing: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites?
I'd try to avoid or hide ads. I like FF the most among the browsers. Switching to another browser is not a ready option for me.
But the real problem (at least the way I see it) is the tracking, not so much the annoyance of seeing the ads. Even if you avoid actually opening a new tab manually, you might still be tracked behind the scenes.
I think the easiest solution is to just use one of the FF derivatives which will have this tracking disabled.
I would switch to Chromium if Firefox incorporated "personalized ad" tracking. I would also take another look at alternatives like QupZilla.
