Tried quite a few basic security tools. Overall the top one in terms of zero problems combined with excellent function would have to be Avast home.
Others that score highly on the problems/benefits ratio include:
SpywareTerminator, a few minor problems, easily resolved.
    SAS free. No problems.
    Asquared. Hardly any problems.
    SpywareBlaster. No problems.
    Winpatrol. Hardly any problems.
    Scroll down a bit.
AVG effective, but frequent update delays.
Avira AV, effective, but update issues at times.
Comodo firewall excellent, but need to clean up the rules now and then. Block something once, and sometimes it can't connect again. Random high CPU usage, workaround disable logging. Don't need that, anyway. The log can still be read within a session.

I'm kinda surprised nobody's mentioned SandboxIE, actually. 2kb RAM usage on my machine, and stops literally EVERYTHING I come across on the net.

I've had a lot of security software that never gave me a bit of trouble. I've had both the above on this computer for a while now, and just installed Blink 3.1 Beta. The above are all I'm running and likely will use. Blink didn't seem to like Sandboxie, though. Sandboxie, which I liked, had to go.

    Heh least troublesome...

    Thats actually quite difficult

For example many pick Nod32 but it isnt perfect: it would detect Blink as a false positive and the customer support wouldn't respond. Nod32 also crashed on my PC on several occasions, also the control center would not start sometimes, and the control center would sometimes display incorrectly with the blue windows xp theme.

So my pick would be ... firefox as it improves your online security substantially. But thats not technically a security program...

So I'll have to change it to Nod32, my current AV program, a decision I regret.

Yes, 'if it don't work - don't use it' has become my motto. There's bound to be something out there that will.

Another vote for Avast Home (I used to run the most annoying software going i.e. Norton Internet Security 2003) caused me no end of grief and slowed everything to a crawl before I had the good sense to ditch it. In comparsion AvastHome works like a dream (what a relief!)

    I'd also like to mention:
Winpatrol (free version - at the moment)
    SpywareBlaster
Superantispyware. (Free version- at the moment)
    Roboform Free
Kerio Firewall - very efficient and unobtrusive.
Firefox 2.0 with McAfee Site advisor - yes it is a little slower than IE - but it is much more secure, so a price worth paying I reckon.

All of them run happily together and are all trouble free (as well a being free). My Windows 98se now boots quickly (compared to when I had Norton) and runs swiftly and smoothly - well, as swift and smooth as a Windows 98se can get!

I would have to say that I have had the least problems with SSM. I feel that what I have now are some great programs but of my security programs SSM has never given me a problem.

WinPatrol is definitely one of the least troublesome. I have had the free version longer than any other security software. I update it to each new version and use it occasionally. So far for me Blink Persoanl Edition 3.1 Beta has been running well.
