    i use PicPick.
it is the only screen capture app i know that has a screen ruler, protractor and other measuring tools.
those are a must if you do any type of graphic design.

    portableapps.com has a portable version.

here are a few must-have utilities for me:

    Virtuawin
it is a virtual monitor utility that is also portable.
simple, stable, gets the job done with no fuss.
    http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/

    StrokeIt:
    a mouse gesture utility.
StrokeIt is an old application but it works even with Windows 8.1
it is also the most stable of these mouse gesture apps i have tried so far.

It's natively portable with picpick.ini, I just download from Softpedia. Don't know why PortableApps has to repackage it (like uTorrent's settings.dat). Also, you get Jump Lists access to the tools and faster updates that way.

Been playing around with MSI AfterBurner and HWInfo64, For it's OSD (On Screen Display) features.

Seems to work quite nicely, looks like both are keepers :thumb:

Well, after playing around with MSI Afterburner for a few days, I decided that it will have a permanent stay on my hard drive.

It's a must have utility, especially if you do any kind of gaming.

It has everything you could possibly need - Video Card adjustments, OSD hardware and system monitoring, FPS Limiter, Screen Capture, Video Capture, etc.

Best of all, it's all 100% free

    Such a good find :thumb:

Have been tinkering with the Windows Performance Toolkit.
Used it today in combination with PE to trace constant System 6-8% CPU on 8.1 to a bad wireless LAN driver. Fixed!
It's a good tool even for a dilettante like me.

That's exactly what I have been using instead of Skype for the past 3 months or so. Vsee gives me 1) Free 3 way conferance calls (unlike skype where you need to sign up for paid premium membership), 2) Vsee works well on a very slow and unreliable internet. You don't get disconnected every 30 seconds.... 3) Vsee doesn't eat up 80% of your CPU power and doesn't slow down your computer to a crawl....

The only problem with Vsee is that it's currently not on Linux and that while they claim to use open source based encryption we can't really verify this. So for privacy you may still want to consider Jittsi. Im gonna be testing it out in the near future. 100% Open source is the only way to go if one wants to keep minimal privacy on the internet. And as per Mr. Lavison (from Lavabit), no US based company can be trusted with your data.

no, you got me wrong. i just asked if it was possible to communicate with skype users using this software with its own account, or using any other software available. :doubt:
afaik, currently there's no solution for that because of the limitations i've mentioned in my previous post (skype being a proprietary sw).

You should add Greenshot to that list. I like Greenshot because I run triple monitors at work. All I have to do is click the screen I want and Ctrl+Prt Scrn and it only saves the 1 screen. No cropping necessary.

As a writer, I use a lot of utilities geared toward making the writing experience better on Windows. I use Scrivener as my main writing tool and I play around with an endless number of small utilities. There's always something knew.

Ywriter here. I tried Scrivener and am found it similar in some respects to Ywriter.

Also battling with Adobe Photoshop CS2 v9 and, I'm afraid, losing.

does Ywriter allow a chapter to be broken up into multiple chapters? For instance, if I have 10 chapters and see that chapter 5 needs broken into 3 chapters, will Ywriter allow chapter 5 to be broken into chapters 5,6 and 7 and move all the following chapters up?

Also, what file format does this save as? .doc, .docx, txt? something else?

    thanks

Re-added WizMouse, haven't used that since switching from a desktop to laptop over a year ago and mainly using the touchpad (incompatible with Synaptics). Now I'm transitioning to mainly using an USB mouse (due to gaming).

The most useful software I have found in a while: f.lux.
I've been using it for a week and already can't imagine computing without it. This one will save your eyesight. :thumb:
