Ok.. i'm a little confused on what Returnil is and how it handles updates for Windows, antivirus software, etc..., if your machine is in a virtual mode. And how is performance?

And how is this different than SafeSpace which virtualizes any application?

Returnil virtualizes the system partition (until the next reboot).
I use Sandboxie like you SafeSpace for application virtualisation and Returnil sometimes for software tests which require no reboot.
The advantage with Returnil is that you don't have to setup a sandbox with all its rules.
Just start "Session Lock" and do what you like.
But take care that nothing can make an escape from your system partition.

    Cheers
