Lots of things aren't compatible with Kindle--why I'd never own one.

I can't speak to that because I don't know enough about the various tablets. However, except for Avast I have not found anything that I wanted that was not available for the Kindle. My own use doesn't require many apps. I mostly got it for reading books, and when necessary do a little work on the internet.
As for Avast, that is not really a problem as Trend Micro came installed on it, and if I decide to try another then ESET is available for it. Both are as good or better than Avast.

    Regards,
    Jerry

I got eset for free (2 years) and it is nice and feels leaner than avast.

One tip-off to any device being painfully proprietary is when there are "Kindle" versions vs. the normal version of software. Additionally, many reviews of apps on Google play store will ding normal software for not running/not being compatible with Kindle.
