WD Removable Hard Drive not recognised..

Hello there!
This is my first post on these forums and just wondered if I could borrow some of your expertise?

I recently bought a 250gb "essential" external hard drive by western digital. Well it is supposed to provide the means to install via plug and play but when I do connect it to my PC or laptop neither of them recognise the device.

My windows updates are completely up to date, and I can't find anywhere to attain the xp drivers required for this hardware. Has anyone got any ideas?

have you checked the event log?
start,control panel,adminstive tools,event viewer
see if any red entries if so read them to see what failed.
thats a start.
