I'm still trying to download updates from the server. This problem has been ongoing now for about a month. I need to know if it is a firewall issue.

I posted a screenshot in an earlier thread, and Mark replied. However, since my last post, I have not received a reply.

I would like to continue using the product.

    Vector,

At the time you first posted about your problem there was a significant server and DNS problem related to the Javacool sites, so there were people mixing together various site access problems (install kits downloads, updates downloads, website page access problems), so it was difficult to determine much of anything about what was happening then.

Now, the server and DNS problems seem to be mostly gone so, let's start fresh on looking into this.

First, can you get to both of these site references without any problem? You should see two main product pages for Javacool programs, each is located on different servers, so we want to see if you can get to each of them:

    SpywareBlaster page at Javacool Software

    SpywareGuard page at Wilders Security

Next, can you get access to the manual update files for SpywareBlaster? These are basically text files which if you saved them to disk, under the exact names specified, you could move them to the SpywareBlaster folder (over writing the ones there) and restart SpywareBlaster and be up-to-date:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/sbdatabase.dtb
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/sbdatabase2.dtb
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/sbinfo.dtb
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/ckdatabase.dtb

If you can access all of those with your browser then the question becomes what is different about the permissions set on SpywareBlaster's updater? For this we'll need to know what kind of firewall you are running, and what type of network you are on? (Home LAN? Business network? Direct connection/dialup?)

There are so many different factors that can impact whether or not you can access updates like this that there is no single "one size fits all" answer.

    Hey Mark,

I can not get to either of the site references you listed. However, there is no problem when I access the manual update files.

My firewall is a hardware firewall. I have a D-Link Broadband Ethernet Router. The model number is DI-704P. I am running a local area network at home. I have a cable connection with Comcast as the provider.

    Actually, it's Mike. ;)

So, you can't get to the two primary Javacool sites at all, eh? What exactly happens? What error page do you get in the browser when you hit those links?

    Mike,

When I try to access the sites, I get this error:

    The page cannot be displayed.

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

    Hi Vector,

Well, there's good news :D and bad news... :doubt:

The good news is there is a totally new version of SpywareBlaster out. See this thread:

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=26203

But, the bad news is that we can't really test the way we just started out above. The version is different now and it pulls updates slightly differently. So, to continue to test, you'll need to deinstall the old 2.6.1 SpywareBlaster, go to the Javacool site (or a mirror site if you can't get to the main site) to download and then install version 3.0.

After you have 3.0 installed, you'll have to try running it and checking for updates and then post back here. Of course, another issue now is that the servers are all going to be busy as everyone starts upgrading and update on the new version.

But, the key is certainly going to be whether you can even access the Javacool sites at all. What you posted above about not getting at all to those first two sites is disturbing and certain the key to finding the problem.

    Hey Mike,

Well, it's bad news right now. I can not access the Javacool sites at all. So, is there another site to download the new version?

I'll send you a special link via IM here at the board. At the top of the screen you'll see a link where it says "you have 1 messages"...

Click where it says 1 message (or more, if you have more message), and use the link provided. Let us know once you have it downloaded and installed.

    Mike,

Thanks for the link. I have the new version downloaded and installed.

I did a check for updates, and there were no updates available.

    You have the latest protection.

So, do we know why I could not access Javacool sites? I think this was a factor in not being able to download updates last time.

Well, clearly we don't know what the problem was, but it is very encouraging that the new version told you that no updates are available.

In order for it to "know that", it would have had to connect to the update site successfully. If it could do that, then maybe this version will work for you.

But, we won't know that for sure until the next definition update. Keep an eye here for the next update (a week or two at most usually), and let us know if it updates for you successfully.

The files below are not very current. Are there newer ones located in another location?

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/sbdatabase.dtb
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/sbdatabase2.dtb
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/sbinfo.dtb
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.net/spywareblaster/ckdatabase.dtb

    Thanks.

    Jason
