Unable to Uninstall or Reinstall Vsn 3

I was trying to update my XP SP3 laptop with the latest version. My Vista Pro desktop updated flawlessly. When updating I got an error that it couldn't access the log.dat file and rolled everything back. I tried to uninstall through Add/Remove and still the same issue. I booted to safe mode and tried uninstall and got an error and it rolled back. I tried installing version 4 anyway and get the error about being unable to access the log.dat file. I tried using CCleaner, cleaning the registry, you name it. I cannot rip version 3 (it was the latest version) from this laptop. I am about to give up but it pisses me off because I own 2 licenses. How can I get rid of version 3 and install version 4?
