    Another option is to extract the package (.deb, .rpm).

    Then run from local directory with ld_library_path set accordingly.

    This is sort of like fake root/portable apps mode.

    Even works with servers, if you modify the startup/shutdown scripts to point to new relative location and not the full installation path.

    thanks for pointing this out. Although for the average user the other approach is probably easier.
