The external drives were connected using USB 3.0 on both systems. I made the discs four times; once on my system prior to adding drivers, once on my system after adding drivers, once on the clients laptop without adding extra drivers, and once on the clients laptop after adding extra drivers. I'm not sure if this will help, but there is a difference between the versions of image for Windows being used; my system has the registered version, and the one I used on the clients laptop was a 30 day trial. The drivers I added to the discs were extracted from our respective systems, so they should've worked. I tried to get the same external hard disk to be recognized on both our systems, yet it was not.

I do not have Windows 8, so I cannot try winPE 4.0. Is there anything that that might offer me that using image for the next does not; is there a reason to upgrade?

    n8,

Thanks for the info. I just did a test that was most interesting. A TBWinRE UFD was created in a Win7 computer that didn't support USB 3. No drivers were added. The UFD was then used in a computer that supported USB 3.

The USB 3 HD was hot plugged to a USB 3 port but the USB 3 HD wasn't seen by TBWinRE.

The USB 3 HD was hot plugged to a USB 2 port and the USB 3 HD was seen by TBWinRE.

If I create the TBWinRE UFD in Win8 then USB 3 works fine. Maybe that's where we differ. I really like Win8 and Win8.1.

I kind of had the opposite experience; nothing I plug into my USB 3.0 drives worked as I would've expected them to, but a flash drive I plug into USB 2.0 was recognized. This was the same on both systems.

The winPE disk that I use now is an older 3.0 disc. One of the reasons I do not want to get rid of it was because it has image for Windows built-in to it. But, I have since learned that is not needed. I would be interested in trying when PE 4.0, if I did not have to buy Windows 8 in order to do so. That seems like it would be interesting to at least test. It also seems worth checking into because of the ability for when PE 4.0 to have more, better, integrated drivers. Image for Linux works on my system, and my clients laptop, but who's to say that it will always be recognized by every system I tried on? I think when PE 4.0 would be much better for that. Again, that's if I did not already have to buy Windows 8 in order to test it?

Anyone know of any good winuilder projects that use when PE 4.0?

Do you multi-boot with BIBM? You could install Win8.1 as a trial OS and build a TBWinRE.

I don't have a license for BIBM. I've never used it. I currently use EasyBCD to boot into ISOs, that load into RAM. But I don't dual-boot OSes.

You could also use TBWinPE with the Windows 8 ADK (or 8.1 ADK). It's a large download but you don't have to get or install Windows 8.

Oh that's funny. I was just coming here to post about that. I build a winpe 4.0 disk from there. Chris split from winbuilder and started his own forum, the oven. I used win7se to build my 3.0 disc. The 4.0 disc ran very smoothly. I integrated a few generic driver pack and used the pe plugin that cam with IFW. All appears to be working very smoothly.

Is this something I can build for clients, if they have their own IFW key? The WADK is free, so it won't matter right?

You can distribute Winbuilder only that without contain any copyright files and serial keys.

You cannot distribute a pre-built WinPE to anyone even WADK is free for Windows users, but it has copyright. If you want to distribute a pre-built WinPE to someone, you may need to buy licenses from Microsoft or ask for the permission from Microsoft.

    Hi Andylau,

Thank you for the above link. I downloaded the above but was not able to do anything with it.

Can you post the instructions for a novice like me?

    Best regards,

    Mohamed
