This is my comment and I don't claim to be any sort of expert. On looking at version 6.0, I feel that there has been some unnecessary tinkering in this version which detracts from the ease of usage. Things do not flow as well for the user and simple basic tasks become slightly more complicated and less 'intuitive'. I believe that there is an over emphasis on changes to the GUI, text editor and icons. I feel that the text editor is not as simple and accessible (eg when it comes to 'save') and comes with certain default settings (spell checking (red underlines) etc) and drop down menu and a flood of options and icons that make it over complex and confusing. Tails does not need to be a 'Mint' The new default colour changes to file manager icons etc 'impose' a bit. I feel that basic structure and function is a good thing to work upon but I don't like gimmicky change. In my opinion Tails does not need to be a 'Mint'. Having said that, this is not a review and not full coverage as such, I am not a reviewer. Some of the 'meat' in the distribution is probably good (I haven't examined it extensively) and a lot of work has gone into it, (which applaud) but I think the developers need to keep within the sensible parameters of basic functional usage and less on 'change for change sake). I think that functionality, durability, consistency, accessibility and a broad usage/simplicity of use should be at the core of a software like this. Hopefully this will be seen as a constructive criticism
Hello @sdmod Some GUI changes may have been made for the sake of security, or maybe a committee vote believes it is good for the public. Your comments are quite reasonable, but may not be read by the project's leadership. But please do consider copying your post and sending it to the project's members at their site. Please put the new version through as many features as you can and continue your intelligent discourse at tails.net. @1PW Thanks for your kind comments I always send my comments directly through 'whisper back' and prior to posting here I had sent my thoughts on 6.0 as posted here. As I mentioned, I am not an analyst or reviewer and am not experienced in these matters to the degree that I can give a deep, educated, expert criticism. The reason that I post without deep experience is that I regard myself as a 'newbie' and comment from that perspective. I imagine many more in the same 'boat'. I believe that this is valid because I feel that an OS like this has to serve many people, within certain parameters, of various/varying, needs, abilities, backgrounds, language and cultures and from 'low' to 'high', it must be usable, and stable. At times the availability and accessibility of this (almost unique) platform might be a matter of life or death so it needs those levels and depths of 'accessibility'. I know that there are very many reasons that someone might use Tails, and not necessarily (as some think) nefarious, to do with human dignity and the right to communicate freely, without 'vested' impingement. In these times, as the digital world closes in on us externally and internally. I believe that in these days of multi faceted 'onslaught, (digital and otherwise) any tools to help us maintain the respect, self determination and fullness of our own humanity, remain crucial to our survival as individuals, families and as a species. I worry at times, when thinking of, (what I regard as good software), that philosophies and agendas in disparate members of development communities will cause corruption of stability. Sometimes these energies can by quite well meaning. We human beings all have our egos, preferences, ambitions 'world view' and flaws and we all impact on our world in different ways. This has happened so many times in my Internet experience that personal political 'leanings' have brought down the whole 'Apple Cart' or spoiled a concise and otherwise functional piece (or brand) of software. When these softwares are crucial to our security, defence, privacy and ability to function fully, I feel that stability, is paramount. When I think of dispruptive elements to the internet, I think of 'Blinkies' (remember those), popups, rogue or over controlling mods killing forums, scammers, grifters, obtrusive,adverts, 'phone homes' in software, adware/rentware., They were my 'pet' hates but I think that things have gone, exponentially, past the concerns of my youth. I suppose that I am a sort of puritan regarding Operating systems and software. I love clean functional, usable, no strings, software. 'Long live Utilitaria!' When I use a thing, I like that thing, to be recognisable, on return, as the same thing, that was there before. Maybe I'm just getting old? Some say Queen Victoria has passed away.
