Tumblr is reportedly on life support. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...-support-as-its-latest-owner-reassigns-staff/ A lot of blogging accounts will soon be looking for a new home (as well as the other 'stuff' they are well known for). They currently have a test instance using ActivityHub but that will likely disappear too if/when Tumblr shuts down.
TikTok is the New TV https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-new-show-tv-takeover/ However, no mention of the impact advertisers will have on these short movies. I expect the ads will be baked in & voluminous.

This is a survey by Pew Research: Teens, Social Media and Technology 2023 https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2023/12/11/teens-social-media-and-technology-2023/ My comment: You are probably aware that teens love being online (a lot). This report has produced some excellent graphs that give a clearer and wider perspective of what teens are drawn to and what they are moving away from in social media.
Well, that was a nice trip down memory lane. I first connected to the web back in 1996, because I read about AOL, I knew this was something big. But I honestly didn't know that before AOL there were already online services in the US. I watched an old episode of ALF where he was stocktrading, I didn't know this was already possible for home users back in the 80's, so I was surprised. You can also find a clip on YouTube, see second link. https://alf.fandom.com/wiki/We're_in_the_Money https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNOk7nk7kVE

Spotify changing strategy in 2024. https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/02/media/joe-rogan-spotify-wide-distribution/index.html FYI: Spotify basically streams music but it is also considered a social media site because of its integration with Facebook and X. Spotify podcasts are also available on Apple, Amazon and YouTube.
Against trend-bait https://www.vox.com/culture/24062406/tiktok-trends-slang-terms-coining My comment: I'm not against trend-bait. To me it is just fun and mostly harmless. Some are cleverly sarcastic and I like that. One example I came across that someone on social media coined is 'digital coal'. Mainstream media who cover cryptocurrency get the nuance and they use 'digital coal' more often than not.
Bluesky and Mastodon users are having a fight that could shape the next generation of social media. https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/14/b...ld-shape-the-next-generation-of-social-media/ My comment: The Fediverse will have a lot more to deal with when Threads federates (planned for this summer according to Meta).
