I have a copy of Partition Magic 8.0 that I've had for about a year and never used. So that gives you an idea how much I really need disk partitioning s/w. But with hard drives getting bigger and cheaper every day I think its just a matter of time before I'm going to want to actively control partitions. I just bought True Image for backup and Acronis is offering me a promotional deal on DDS for a pretty good price.

So I was wondering if someone could give me an honest opinion on whether the copy of PM I already have is good enough for occasional basic usage, or if I'd gain something worthwhile if I bought DDS.

I know it would allow me to run multiple OS's, but I don't think that is really a feature I would use. So from a pure partitioning and disk utility standpoint how does DDS compare to PM?

I can't speak for PM as I have never used it, but I do find DD a very useful program. You don't have to use OSS for multi-booting if you don't want (or need) to.

DD also includes a disk editor that gives you direct access to the MBR and the sectors. This can be very helpful depending on your needs.

One nice thing with having DD and TI is that they can both be included on the same CD or flashdrive. The boot menu lets you select what you want to run.

I have both PM and DD (and the Linux partitioning tools PartedMagic, Gparted, Qtparted, parted, cfdisk and fdisk). To be honest, it's been a long time since I used Partition Magic. Since it's older it will reject perfectly valid partition layouts created by some of the newer partitioning tools.

Of all of the partitioners that I've tried, I prefer Disk Director because it has the richest feature set.

I just bought disk director and have had nothing but problems. First I received the snapapi.dll file not found error. Reinstalled app per recommendation on this forum and now I am getting the has not found any hard disks failure when the program launches.

The link to repair this issue has expired. At this point I am out of time and just have to move on to something else.

In addition I have Privacy Expert and that product has never run properly. Always hangs up and often computer won't shut down properly. Those issues have been reported numerous times on this forum but there doesn't appear to be a fix.

In the past I have success with their products but lately it has been a big waste of time.

    I'm running XP SP1.

Also have True Image and that works fine
