In the complex we stay I had poor fibre wireless broadband, phoned the provider/server at the complex and they changed the DNS in the wireless receiver to 8.8.8.8 (Google). Since then Shields Up shows ports 53, 80, and even 22 as open (22 is denied in the iptables). As all incoming connection ports are denied by default in Linux I am wondering what is going on. Is Shields Up somehow showing ports open despite them being closed ? I was also told to change the nameserver from the default 127.0.0.1 to 8.8.8.8 in /etc/resolve.conf

What is going on here ?

You're probably not scanning your own host but the router, which is configured to allow common ports. Methinks.
