I'm a college kid trying to fix someone;'s computer and I'm in over my head! He definitly has a CWS variant. I ran CWShredder and it said it removed Searchx variant along with 3 others. However, Searchx keeps coming back! How can I tell if it is also the realyellowpage variant? Symptoms: IE home page set to about:blank, actually a search portal; Norton AV script errors; AOL freezing; zoneAlarm acting strange.

P.S. I might try a HD reformat. If I back up the documents to a CD will the virus travel with them? I have a feeling not since it infects through the Java VM.

P.P.S. Also for anyone who helps: I am an experienced computer user. My ability is to where I can build my own comp. Also I've always been able to fix anything until now!

    Thanks!

1.Run start.bat and press option 1. 'output.txt' will be created in the folder

then post that log here whjen we can tell you what to do next

Ok here is the Output.txt from dll fix. Also I have two other questions: Since I only occasionaly have access to the infected computer, could I have as many instructions in advance as possible? Also can this virus spread through floppy discs, etc. Thanks!!

    Hi SonicMonkey,

Run start.bat again and choose option 2. Hit '1' and enter dll name manually:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\BNFL.DLL

Download and run AdAware : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (make sure you have latest updates) and run it.

You can also run CWShredder finally to clean up other entries.

Post a new HijackThis log when you are done.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Ok, I did the following:

    Ran FixDLL with specified file.
The computer restarted and second.bat ran

Ran Adaware with latest update and removed 103 objects!! OMG

Ran CWS Shredder again - it didn't find anything

Ran Hijack this and got a log. It's below

The IE seems to be working normaly now. I reset the Home Page to google.com

The only problem, which may or may not be releated, is that AOL 9.0 optimized (yes I know AOL is crap) keeps freezing the whole computer. Can this be releated to the virus?

P.S> attached a new dll fix log for extra info!
    Thanks!

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files
    C:\Program Files\CasinoOnline\

then go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it

as XP will not let you delete files less than 24 hours old as it thinks it might need them please also do this
while in the temp folder, select view and select details.
then right click a blank part and select arrange icons by, and select show in groups and modified, that will give a list of all files in date order with today at the top of the page.
select all the files/folders except the today ones and delete them all.

and select EVERYTHING in C:\windows\temp except temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete all that as well

    1) Open Control Panel
    2) Click on Internet Options
    3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
    4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
    5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
    6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive

    then
Reboot normally & see if all is ok

you might have to reinstall the AOL software as it's quite possible taht the cws hijacker might have damaged some of the AOL components
