Just to confirm your results- in Vista I downloaded and installed as admin. Worked fine. I right clicked a file and uploaded to VT as advertised. Thanks.

Er, I mean you can use the Windows task Scheduler on an automatic schedule, not to use the Avira updater manually. Open the Task Scheduler in Administrative Tools and add a schedule for update.exe located in the Avira folder. There is no need to run the tray icon (avgnt.exe). There is no need to restart your PC after doing an update either unless it installs a major program update.

As for setting the drivers to manual, I use pserv2 but you can use Device Manager as well. Set avgntflt, avipbb, avgio and ssmdrv to manual load. You might want to take note of their original setting in case you want to change it later. Pserv allows you to type notes in the description field.

VirusTotal adds an item to your Send To menu. It should be visible regardless if it's 32or 64bit. You can always add a link manually.

Asquared runs a background service, even when not in use. Good, though.

If you run administrator account, you can disable this service with no problem.
(maybe a tad slow down of the program opening.)

It is only the huge slow Ikarus updates that puts me off A-Squared.
Maybe they have they sorted out now.
