For what it's worth, the May 2007 issue of 'PC World' had a long feature on best free software. The top registry cleaner was TweakNow RegCleaner Standard (find.pcworld.com/56754). The second and last one was Clean My Registry (find.pcworld.com/56756).

I don't use a registry cleaner at the moment because I don't have a system backup other than System Restore, and it does not work reliably for some unknown reason, other than the fact that it's Microsoft. Messing with the registry can be a tricky thing, I have heard many times from those more competent than I.

I have done some scans with Registry Mechanic, which has found some 150 or so problems, but since my system seems to be running well enough right now, maybe it's best to leave well enough alone.

This is bullshit from PC World. I tried it and it scans only CLSIDs and found nothing on my PC. Even CCleaner finds much more than this.

PCWorld is way off on this one. I downloaded and ran, deleted the "safe to delete" and then found that my MS Office Pro 2007 was no longer functioning as it had before running the registry checker. Running the TweakNow restore did not repair the provlem so I had to run a system restore from a check point before I loaded TweakNow. Also note, the only way I can run a system restore is in the "safe" mode. Otherwise, it won't restore.

    Ace Utilities.
It's worked good for me as a registry cleaner and junk file remover.

Using System TuneUp at present on my Vista and waiting for RegSupreme Pro and TuneUp Utilities to become available for my new OS. :D
The first one mentioned is just Ace Utilities, but with a new coat. :D

BTW You can use your Ace Utilities license key to activate System TuneUp.
Those three never let me down, so I keep using them, but making sure to always take a backup before fixing anything. :)

RegSupreme Pro is one of many favs i use but you still have to exercise caution and good judgement when using them, especially where it concerns "UNUSED FILE EXTENSIONS". They somehow always miss those, all my file extensions are needed and useful even if they are created by third-party programs that depend on them to function or save settings. Hhuu :cautious: Once i even lost a SSM *.cfg file with my global settings so now i move it (and others) off the system disk to keep their dirty little paws off of them.

Are you asking about System Tuneup? If so, it is not supposed to be a stripped down version. It's mainly a modified GUI that is supposed to be easier to navagate between tasks,

I've betaed for the top-tier programs and would use RFA, if I was not concerned about continual reformatting regardless of the software!

Play in the registry and ask for trouble

That is why it is recomened that you always backup the registry first. I used to use Tweak now registry cleaner along time ago http://www.tweaknow.com/ and the first thing it did was make a registry backup opon instillation.
    @Screamer Same here.

Just wondering where these fit in the poll?Other?

    1) Window Washer (not a registry cleaner?)
    2) System Mechanic 7 (iolo) it does mess with the registry and tweaking of many systems settings

What are poster experiences with these?

Don't use anything that messes with the registry. I subscribe to the opinion that it's best left alone completely...

I use RegSupreme Pro. I only remove items that I KNOW are safe to remove. If I can't read what it is in its description it is left alone. The app backs up your removals at the end so IF your computer starts acting funny you can quickly restore.:p

    nope not a registry cleaner
Its both a registry cleaner and tweaker and so much more.
Window Washer - Its does what it says and does it well. Hasnt been updated in a while though.

System Mechanic - I liked the version 3.x. It was lean and very effective at cleaning my computer, but its been getting bloated since then. I have not tried the latest version 7.
