In two years or whatever, I'm already contemplating purchasing W9 if it turns out to be similar to XP - W7, as there as been some speculation that it may. I was wondering if I do the upgrade from my W7, assuming software is compatible, will the licenses from purchased software be carried over, e.g. image apps, security apps, etc. or would I have to re-purchase? Thank you!

software are usually available for different Windows OSes and usually licensed to a user or computer, with limitations.

you might need a new license if you a want MAC/Linux version of a program but within Windows you should be fine.

For me, never a problem with subscription-based software activation/updates when going from Windows 2000 to XP to Vista to Windows 7 and back to XP.
