Before I update I have 5512 items in the database. When I click on update the number reverts to a lesser value. Then when I click on update again, the original larger number is restored.
Is there anything I can do to alter this behaviour?
    Thanks

    Hi,

What lesser value / date does the database revert to?

    Thanks,

    Thanks Javacool

I start with 5512 items in the database. I click on update and end up with 5460 items in database loaded 2/4/2006
I click on update again and then see 5423 items in database dated 1/6/2006
When I click on update a third time, the value of 5512 is restored.
I hope that this gives you a clue as to my problem.

    Hi,

Are you using a non-English version of Windows, or do you have any non-English regional settings (time, date, etc.)?

EDIT: Also, what Internet Service Provider do you use to connect to the net? And are you using any sort of proxy/filtering software that might be caching pages?

EDIT[2]: Another thought: could you try clearing your Temporary Internet Files in Internet Explorer, rebooting, and then running the update wizard again? (Open IE and choose Tools>Internet Options from the menus, and then the "Delete Files..." button.)

    Thanks again,

    -Javacool

I am a 66 year old newbie trying to come to terms with the jargon but will try to answer your questions as well as I can.

I am using Windows XP Professional - it is an English edition and all my time settings are UK values.
I connect to the net with Firefox and my ISP is British Telecom Broadband (2 meg). I regret that I don't understand what proxy/filtering software is.

Re edit 2 - do I need to do this given that I don't use IE?

I hope I am not trying your patience!!

Yup - please still give edit 2 a try (cleaning the IE Temporary Internet Files).

And no worries - we'll get to the bottom of this soon enough. :)

    Best regards,

    Thanks again Javacool.
    This gets curiouser and curiouser!
I started off this morning with 5512 items in the database.
I did a manual update and there were 5552 items, dated 3/7/2006
I then did update again and saw 5515 items
    and again and saw 5604
I then cleared the IE files as you instructed and updated again - the 5604 dropped to 5552.

Incidentally I have good antivirus protection, updated daily (Fsecure, ewido, adaware and spybot)
    Hope the above helps.

I have read some of your replies to others' problems, Javacool.
I have altered my regional settings to English (US) and the short date format is now mm.dd.yyyy.
Today when I tried update I was told no new updates available and the total size of the database remained the same and did not reduce in value.
    Perhaps my problem is solved?
    Than you

    Hi,

    Thanks for the info! :)

Could you please try setting those values back to what they were beforehand, and see if the issue returns? Also, could you please post the previous values here (especially the previous short-date value)?

    Thanks again,

    -Javacool

    Thanks Javacool
I reset the short date to 11/3/2006 and tried to update. Lo and behold all I got was the no new updates available message and none of the unloading of previous updates that I reported earlier
I have left the short date as above (i.e.UK style not US) and will see what happens when an update is available

There was new update for SpywareBlaster today. It uploaded perfectly, even with the date setting in Windows as 16/3/2006.
So the problem is solved but I don't know why!
    Thanks for your help
