Do you play online. There are so many sites now that let you use play money, this will help you learn. I play for play money only. On the site I use I took $1000 that they gave me and turned it into $96,000 in 2 months.

With hold' em remember this. When new, play conservatively.

First 3 spots past the dealer, if you do not have a high pair, or an ace and another face card, fold. If you have a strong hand show it quick through betting. This will scare off those at the end of the betting pool that have weak hands. If they bet, and reraise it will certainly tell you that they might have something really good. You might want to then rethink folding.

If you are the last 2 spots, or the dealer you can play a weaker hand. A lower pair, 2 face cards with one higher than jack. You can also wait in these positions to see how everyone bets. If you get a great hand off the flop suck the others in(let them bet and then reraise).

The big thing is to take your time, learn and play smart. Its better to fold out 16 hands and win when you do have a good hand. When you are new it is very hard to bluff.

An example would be if you are playing for a $50 ante. If you fold 16 hands with 8 players, you would be down $100 in big blinds, $50 in small blinds and say you put in a few hundred to test out a few flops, you will be down roughly around $500 to $800. However you win the 17th hand and on average this kind of table with this type of ante will have a pay out of $1500.
Therfore patience has made you $700.

**In closing...when new play conservatively, and have patience!

Depending on which type of poker your playing......try to keep all your clothes on..... :D.....That's LESSON #1......

LESSON #2....If you can't play, don't play, certainly NOT for money........

LESSON #3....Stick to playing Patience or Knitting......

LESSON #4.....Remember, you'll to thank me later......

There used to be a great DOS game, World Series of Poker, which recreated the game (and environment) of the classic annual Nevada event. I forget what you "arrived in town" with, but you had to work your bankroll up to $10K in other games, various kinds of low-stakes draw and stud, plus slots and vid poker (you could even pawn your watch), to make the opening stake for the Series which was played with a gradually increasing minimum and never a maximum. Great way to practice and learn Texas Hold-Em.

Don't think it ever got "ported" to Windows, alas, so it's a goner on my XP system. And even if if did run, I never bothered to put in game ports/drivers on my last two systems, and the game used a joystick for player movements (room to room), choices, etc.

You got to know when to hold ’em,
    know when to fold ’em,
    Know when to walk away,
    and know when to run.
    You never count your money,
when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’
    when the dealin’s done.

    Sound familiar? :D :D :D
