    Sure,
This is a friends PC, it started off by my friend telling me that the pc was very slow!!!
The first thing I did was update the virus protection which was way out of date then i ran all critical Windows updates and ran a virus scan. (BTW- i had to manually download the definition file from Symantec because whenever I try to run Live Update it bombs also when I try to browse to Symantec's site I get page not found This also happens with other Virus protection sites)

After I got Symantec updated i found that the pC was infected with the Sasser virus. So I downloded the removal tool from Symantec's wesite (On another pc) and followed the removal instuctions.

After that I ran Spybot and AdAware with the latest defs and removed all.

So now the PC is still slow and I still can't run Symantec Live update or browse to thier site.

    Any ideaso_O

    Renato

    Hi rtullio,

Can you find this file soundtask.exe
Rightclick it and check under properties > version tab what you can find out

After editing the hosts file again, make it read only. See if that helps as a temporary solution.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Ah. Thanks for that, Derek.

So that is the process to kill and file to delete.

There are several versions around at the moment. Anything with SOUND***.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sound****] sound***.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [sound***] sound***.exe

is suspect and likely to be an agobot version.

I've seen soundman, soundtask, soundmanager, soundmgr and various other combinations recently

luckily Kapersky online has a general detection capability for agobot so a pretty sure way is to test there

    Hi guys,
    Thanks for responding.
Looks like you are right on the money!!
I read the Sophos site and the it's almost identical except for instead of soundman.exe it is soundtask.exe in the same location of the registry.
I also submitted the file on the Kaspersky Labs site and it was returned as being infected with the Backdoor.agobot.gen. Why didn't Symantec antivirus or Panda's online scan pick this upo_O
Should I delete these registry entries, tick these entries in HijackThis and delete the file as well?? I'm not sure if this is also a used file.
Please let me know how to proceed.
Could this also be causing the slowness?
    Thanks
    Renato

    Hi rtullio,

The file should be deleted asap. To do so bring up TaskManager, select the process and endtask it.
Then delete the file. You do not need it and it is most certainly slowing you down.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    yes do this please

all ther new ones take a little time for the antivirus developers to include in the databases, at the last count there were over 900 different versions of agobot all subtly different and all needing different detections.

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [soundtask] soundtask.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [soundtask] soundtask.exe

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\soundtask.exe
