    Hello,
    Just used the software mentioned above to restore my friend's Sony VAIO VGN-AR71S and everything went smooth apart from one tiny issue, namely the XHDD isn't recognized any more, and it's WD drive.

    on Vista SP2 x86

    anyone seen such a snag before? any ideas on possible fix[es]?

    Please check if XHDD has drive letter assigned:
    * go to Start
    * right-click 'Computer' and select "manage"
    * go to Disk Management in Storage
    * find your external WD XHDD
    * right-click partition on XHDD and select 'Change Drive letters & paths'
    * click Add, select drive letter and confirm operation.
    Mounted partition should appear in My Computer with new drive letter.

    Hi korben
    Could you possibly please specify : "isn't recognized any more" ?
    Does the system acknowledge that you plug in the drive into the PC USB plug but just doesn't recognize it ? (does the "found new hardware wizard" come up ,can't find drivers, whatever, .... ? ) , or does the system not react at all when you plug in the drive into the PC USB plug ?
    Possibly I might not be able to help , put I can for sure not even make a guess unless you make a more exact description of the problem....

    the XHDD is fine, it works on all other laptops but hers, which sucks ;)

    Hi korben,

    Does your friend's laptop recognized other XHDD? If not, check if a driver for usb drives is present. Just connect the XHDD then check in the Device Manager. If there is none, install it. If there is a driver present, try reinstalling it.

    I'm back

    the driver is present

    she chose : update the driver

    message: it is current

    then she uninstalled the driver, restarted the system and pluged the XD in again, the system itself installed the driver

    the situation is back to normal, by normal I mean she still cannot use the disk

    I know...I could restore the vista system from recovery dvds... but I refuse to do it as this procedure + configuration of the system takes ca 10h

    that's way I chose Paragon's product in the 1st place grrr

    I have and use WD drives for backup using Paragon Backup and Recovery Advanced 2010, Paragon Drive Backup 9 Pro, Acronis True Image Home 11 and both Acronis Seagate edition/WD edition and did not encounter your problem....maybe it's the compact editions bug or something.

    Did you try restoring through the Linux cd? In a non-Windows environment. I sometime do a restore via the Linux environment cd and it works.

    It is frustrating so to speak to encounter such....Maybe WD support can help you with updated drivers or an event may have been reported to them like the one you experienced.

    Did you contact Paragon support about this?

    I always use the linux recovery....

    Well, I haven't contacted the support directly, I just assumed this section will possibly draw their attention as it's Official Paragon Support Forum, but it may be the right course of action since it's very frustrating, thanks mate!

    Korben,
    Try the following:
    * connect XHDD
    * open Device Manager
    * select Universal Serial Bus controller group, expand it
    * delete ALL listed ports\devices: select them one-by one and press Delete
    * confirm all operations.
    * go to Actiona - Scan for HW changes
    Check if it will find XHDD
