    Come again o_O o_O o_O

Are you referring about OZ rules? Seen one game in Sydney- liked it. After an hour of puzzling out what it was all about. Actually quite simple: just kick each others *sses as hard as one can :D

Might wanna see that one- i'll look it up.

Perhaps if you sit on it :p , you might breed something 'right' after all :D

Regards and play on (whatever you play),

Ah yes, Rugby is a rather cute game. I remember a few years back when the "All Blacks" (I"m sure it is your favorite team) did their ritual before the 1'st whistle. It was a nice touch. I love "Aussie Rules" too.

Of course this thread is about the "BEAUTIFUL GAME". You know, Pele, Baggio, Cruyff, Bergkamp, Linneker, Yashin, Zidane, etc etc etc.

    Play on, big ed

    Last farewell to our General

    Rinus Michels

    • 9 february 1928

    † 3 march 2005

Inventor of "Total Football" or "Clockwork Orange". Grandfather of all Ajax and Holland soccer succes...

    Holland mourns. :'(

In the early hours of the morning the KNVB received the sad news that legendary coach Rinus Michels has passed away. He suffered complications after heart surgery. Michels is Holland's most succesfull coach, winning the 1988 European championships. He will not only be remembered for his obvious prize-winning achievements, but is largely recognized as the architect of the Dutch school.

Rinus Michels was quite a decent player for Ajax in the early fifties, picking up five international caps, but his achievements as a manager earned him the respect he enjoyed throughout the soccer world.

With Ajax, Michels developed Holland's typical style of play, with attacking backs and switching positions. After conquering Europe with Ajax, he implemented his ideas in the national team as head coach during the 1974 World Cup finals. Although hosts Germany beat the Dutch in the final, the 'Oranje' were regarded moral winners of the tournament, introducing the term 'total football'.

His greatest triumph obviously came in 1988 when the Dutch won the European crown. After a long career Michels' technical expertise was used internationally by both the FIFA and UEFA. Almost a year ago he was named Holland's greatest ever manager, during the festivities celebrating fifty years of professional Dutch football. The man who was known as the General was 77 years old.

    We salute you, dear sir.

    R.I.P.

I don't know much about the history of football but as a fairly new follower of this great sport, it is a sad day that this obvious great man and coach has passed....

    Hey Slammer,

Didn't realise who the Gent was when I first heard the news. From what I have read he was a notable figure in the sport. Surely his inovative "Total Football" had a major impact on how the game should be played. In my readings I couldn't help but notice all of the great Dutch players that fell under his influence.

He will be missed by everyone who loves "The Beautiful Game"

    He surely will.
Johan Cruijff said everything he has learned, came from Rinus Michels; and sees the General as his example.
Michels had natural authority over any team; didn't need to impose his leadership; he earned respect naturally.
He was always calm and never offensive in his appearance; in interviews he liked to "speak a lot, but say very little", like he put it himself.
Mystical, intelligent and always kept his guard.
As a person he was somewhat distant, seemingly not to sociable, yet with a very nice sense of dry "Amsterdam-" humor.

He meant everything for Dutch soccer; He was the architect of a kind of breathtaking play that fascinated the world. Together with his disciple and performer/director on the pitch Johan Cruijff he gave this little country something to be genuinely proud of: he put Dutch soccer on the map.

He made us happy & proud.
He always put a grin on my face when ever I heard him talk. Clever man.
We are left with much lovely memories, pictures of succes; and warm feelings of joy we shared together in an orange wave...

    I'll surely miss him heaps...:'(

    slam.

P.S. Very great article indeed, Marianna. Nice to see you around again.

It's one of those 2 most perfect soccerdays of the season:

    sunday 17 april 2005:

    feyenoord rotterdam vs AJAX Amsterdam

    2-3

    :D :D :D

Edit: P.S. I like to express a strong condemning of the dreadful violence that took place outside the stadium in Rotterdam; like hundreds of thousands of soccerfans around the world I enjoy the game and fairplay. Sure, I like to tease, and that should be taken for what is meant: a sportive part of the whole matchday-experience, full of respect for the opponent team and supporters. The so called 'fans' that create havoc are not true supporters of the game; sad to see these very few spoil the fun for so many. But keep the fairplay alive and keep enjoying the game!

    Geez Slammer,

It's been Months since you've had anything to cheer about! So, "YEA" for you! You only have about 240 more Days until you will be compelled to make your predictions for you know what. I am trying to await them patiently.

Was able to watch my Son-in -law (keeper) keep a clean sheet for his Semipro team in So. Florida today. His team is only a couple of points behind the League Leaders so w/5 matches to go they have a good chance to take the title.

    Play on, big ed

I agree on your choice of FRANK LAMPARD.

Not only has his game approved so much on the pitch, apart from that he has got rid of his misbehaviour (both on & off the pitch). Example for youth: Fairplay!
He has worked (and works) hard, has become a well appreciated international player for his country England.
Forward driven, always shoots on target; pure joy to watch his phenomenal actions & goals!
    Lampard should get it.

    regards,
    slam
