Did they send you a key? If so, you can just download the program from Cnet, Softpedia, Norton, etc....

 

All a matter of preference. I leave the skip scanning on. No point in re-scanning everything over and over again. Remove infected compressed files will mean you will lose some zip files that are false positives. Compressed files are not a threat unless you open them and execute a malicious file that was in it. The Office scan may be useful IF you have Microsoft Office installed, which I do but you may not, especially if you are running it on a test machine. They all slow things down. Not bad suggestions, I just don't agree with them.

I agree with you on test machine it is not required and yes I have MS office installed. As for the infected compressed file, I just like it that way and I know until and unless you execute something, it is harmless.

Intelligent skip scanning doesn't mean it skips file which have been scanned already. It skips certain files by extensions........direct quote from nis help files.

You can install the trialware, start using NIS now and input the key later when they send it (or get a key somewhere else if this purchase doesn't work out).

 

"Intelligent Skip Scanning" (ISS) is a sub-category of "Compressed Files Scan" (CFS). CFS has to be turned ON for ISS to be an option. By default ISS is ON if CFS is enabled.

If you take a "container" file, such as zip, and rename it to a "non container" file type, such as JPG, NIS will not scan it if ISS is ON. The logic is the file cannot be opened while it has a non-container extension. This seems like a fairly safe compromise. I feel that having CFS ON is desirable because otherwise you're relying exclusively on Auto-Protect to catch malware within a compressed file at the moment it is uncompressed. ISS can be toggled to see if it makes much difference to scan time.

As already noted this is separate from File Insight which skips files after scanning them the first time and marking them safe.

I know it is sub-category of "Compressed Files Scan". In NIS 2011 the scan times were more or less the same, I didn't find any difference because I didn't had too many compressed files.

yes i could use that, but The Empress of Kitchen and little people will not.unless it's a multilingual installer,and there's only 360 and NAV but no NIS installer

Try emailing their support. I also didn't get the key instantly. The next morning I emailed their customer support and I had a key by the end of the day.

My mistake, I must have gotten that idea from someone on their forums and not actually read that section of the help file. Thanks for pointing that out.

Have you done this? How does it work? Is this a trial or do you get a license key that can be registered in My Norton Accounts?

When you install the product on your pc, it will ask you to put in your account details. After you put in your account details, you will see the product registered in your account.

By the way, this download link is for Norton Antivirus 2012, not Norton Internet Security 2012. And although it says it's a 90 day trial in fact it's 60 days. Anyone know if there's a 60 (or 90) day NIS trial?
