Can you guys recommend backup software, to deal with files and folders, that uses a non proprietary format such as Zip and can do file verification?

I'm not sure with your non-proprietary format requirement, and my memory is kinda rusty about this one. But I think Macrium Reflect can be a good recommendation if I'm not being mistaken.

Areca Backup can backup to .zip. It also has a Check Archive feature. However, for file verification I restore a backup to a different location and then compare with the original files with FreeFileSync.

Hi guys thanks for your responses. I emailed Macrium and they say while they like open formats, they use their own format to achieve better compression and allow for delta backups such as incrementals.

MrBrian I was initially excited to learn about Areca from one of your posts in another thread. After doing some research I discovered Areca needs the java runtime which is too big a security risk. See here , here and here

There is a checkbox in Java settings that shuts off Java in all browsers - see http://java.com/en/download/help/disable_browser.xml.

Here is an older thread about Areca Backup. If Areca's native inability to back up locked files is a concern, you could try http://vscsc.sourceforge.net/ or the non-free ArecaVSS plugin.
