Yes, it's just the d drive (cd). Grover I did what you asked last night, right click, etc...it only took 20 minutes, not hours and nothing changed afterwards. Should I now do a chkdsk /r? Told ya this one perplexed me, nothing like this has ever happened. It just seems it tried to create the secure zone when I asked, had the error on sector one, did the other 2 sectors correctly then hid it away somewhere. I'm about ready to pull my hair out.
So, does anyone want to buy me a ext. hard drive for Christmas? What? No one? Geez. :D Since I'm asking, anyone know where I could get an awesome deal on one? Even if I pray to get some Christmas money I really couldn't spend more than 50 bucks and I know that's near impossible to find something that cheap. Ebay?
For right now, I just want to get my space back, if you guys can help me figure it out I promise I will go out and buy one no matter what the cost!!!!!!

If your plans include purchasing an external drive, I would suggest you review this ongoing forum discussion.

External HDD - a good choice?
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=189265

Pay particular attention to the discussion about size (2.5" or 3.5") plus the power requirements. The 3.5" will probably be cheaper. Seagate offers a 5 yr warranty whereas the other are usually only one year--unless stated otherwise--a few may be 3 yrs--or even less than a year--just be aware.

The current weekly sales flyer from the local stores shows these prices thru Saturday night.

There are basically two formats for an external usb hard drive. The 2.5 inch type and the 3.5 inch type.

The 2.5 inch ones are laptop drives in an enclosure and get their power from the usb port so they don't use external power like the 3.5 inch ones. But they can easily fit in a shirt pocket and they are more expensive.

If you can plug in two connectors that are impossible to mix up, then you can actually buy the drive and the enclosure seperate (these are the 3.5 inch ones) and it will be cheaper this way to get your external drive.

    Here's an example of a 160gig one for $50 plus $5.29 ship:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145125

Here's an example of an enclosure for $12 plus $5.84 ship:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173015

Search Newegg to keep below your $50 budget.

    Mudcrab or others,
If Andrea were to download/install the trial version of Acronis Disk Director 10, do you believe the missing partitions would be visible and removable?

    Andrea,
Both references above relating to newegg are 3.5" drives--not that that's bad. Just an FYI.

It's possible that DD may be able to find the missing space. However, I don't know if it would notice the "error" and not allow any operations on that partition or if it wouldn't look "inside" the existing partition. Deleting the partition and doing a partition recovery search may only find the "corrupted" partition or it may find the original or it may find both the original and the SZ.

I think part of the problem here is that there are bad sectors. This was reported when the SZ was being created. That may be what is causing the problem.

When a TI image backup of the partition is created, is it backing up the entire paritition or only the "small" version? If this image were restored, is the partition restored as the large size or the small size? I realize that these tests can't be run now, but it would be nice to know.

I would run chkdsk /r on the partition to check for bad sectors, though I don't know if it will be checking the "large" or "small" sized partition.

    ----

    Andrea,

Can you run a regular chkdsk on the partition and copy and paste the results into a post? I want to see what size it's reporting for the partition.

    andreah1,
    1. Can you look inside the Device Manager at the listing of disk drives and tell us the information about model number of your hard drive? Their utility can be downloaded and run a drive check with this--in addition to what MudCrab has suggested.

    2. During bootup, if you access safe mode, is "Recovery Console" listed as one of the boot menu options? You may have to press an F" key to show all the safe mode options.

    3. How old is the hard drive? It may need to be replaced and may still be under warranty. You would still need to save any personal data.

Hi guys...just got a back up of my system (to cd's for now) and by the way, from the US! :D Grover, went into device manager and here is the number you are looking for I think, WCD WD800JD-75MSA1, I got the computer approx 2 years ago. While in device manager I looked around and there is a device called Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer, is that supposed to be there? Also, under non plug n play there is one called Acronis Try and Decide and Restore Points Filter? Doubt they have much to do with it but trying to find anything I can.
I am going to attempt to do a chkdsk /r right now and on restart will check on the recovery console...both these things I have never done so bear with me.
I know this has to do with bad sectors, when it started creating the secure zone it said it was creating 3 sectors, as it started the first sector is where I got the error message, I hit retry a couple times then finally ignore, it went on to create 2 and 3 with no problem.
Ok, I'll be back (hopefully) in a short time.

I'm back, with not many more answers. I did a chkdsk /r, everything went fine. Didn't say anything about errors. I booted in safe mode, did not see a recovery console but I do have a restore OS disk, would it be on there? Stupid question but what is a regular chkdsk? Should I try downloading DD and see if it can find my space? I did a defrag and there is a large chunk of fragmented files. When I viewed the report 7 gb's (or close to it) was gobackio.bin. I disabled goback so not sure what this is? Also, after booting up in safe mode then restarting my keyboard wouldn't work...I had to unplug it a couple times to get it to work. Just trying to give you guys everything that's going on.

A "regular" chkdsk is just running chkdsk without using /f or /r with it. For example: chkdsk c:

To save the output, you would run this (it may take several minutes before the prompt returns, just wait):
    Code:
    chkdsk c: > c:chkdskresults.txt
Then attach the chkdskresults.txt file to a post. Otherwise, you can copy the screen output and paste it into a post.

    Here is a sample:
    Code:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is VMDRIVES.

    WARNING! F parameter not specified.
    Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

    File verification completed.
      0 large file records processed.
      0 bad file records processed.
      0 EA records processed.
      0 reparse records processed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
      400 index entries processed.
    Index verification completed.
      5 unindexed files processed.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
      128 security descriptors processed.
    Security descriptor verification completed.
      17 data files processed.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

chkdsk may be hung-up on something. It should normally only take several minutes and not any longer than running chkdsk /f (which you have before, so you should know about how long it takes). Since the output is going to the file, you can't see it.

If you're in Windows, just close the Command Prompt window.

Open a new Command Prompt and just issue the chkdsk c: command. Resize the window to show the entire contents of the output. Take a screenshot and post that or use the mouse to select the text from the screen, press ENTER to copy it and paste it into a [code ] [/code ] block (no spaces).

Ok, did what you said, the first time I did chkdsk it go thru 2 check and thru the 2nd one there was a whole bunch of fixing errors, etc but as soon as it hit 100% the screen went away, never even went into the 3rd check. So, I did chkdsk again and it went thru the whole thing, hope my screen print shows...tried to catch it before it disappeared.

you can try running again from the command prompt
CHKDSK C: /R (press enter to execute the command)

More tomorrow after I research the Western Digital drive. Is this listing correct WDC WD800JD-75MSA1 I could not get a hit via search of http://www.westerndigital.com

Look again at Disk Management image and see if any of the data has changed from what was shown in the capture as a result of you running the chkdsk program.

    Andreah1,

The entire last part of the chkdsk output is missing from your sceenshot. See my example in Post #42.

If you're running chkdsk from the Command Prompt window, it should stay open and on the screen after it's finished.

I recall reading long ago that Go Back and True image can conflict with each other. I also wonder what space is reserved by the Go Back files.

Mudcrab, I was running the chkdsk from the "run" command (start,run)...is there a way that I can open a command prompt as a window? Forgive my stupidness...I'm a whiz on the internet but when it comes to the bones I'm at your mercy. I see the difference from my screen print and yours but that's all that was there. I sat here and watched it run and it took approx 5-10 minutes. Once you tell me I'll do it all over again.
Grover, went back and rechecked the hard drive number, that's the one that is in there. What the heck is going on!!!
I've attached a screen print of Disk Managment and it looks like there's been a change in percentage of free space in all three partitions. I've lost alot in the two "unknowns".
