Taking a hint from wdormann and others, I checked my BIOS to see what the Plug and Play Settings were . For plug and play operating system, the setting was "yes". I changed it to "no". The first time I booted with the Acronis Boot Cd I got errors about the linux drivers trying to load. I disconnected the firewire cable from my computer and immediately the GUI came up. Of course I couldn't see my firewire external drive. I reconnected the cable and rebooted. The Acronis Boot CD GUI loaded and I was able to see my external drive with the firewire connection. Thanks to those here who made suggestions. I'm disappointed, of course, that Acronis support couldn't suggest anything helpful, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Again, thanks to forum support volunteers.
