Bought my Home edition license after seeing it in action myself. Not only is RDR much faster than Windows built-in imaging, but it should help reduce writes on my shiny new Samsung 850 Pro SSD.

I've just installed the free version and created the recovery media, a CD in this case. If I boot from the CD, do I need to enter any key, or can I use the CD to boot any machine with the free version installed?

    Thanks.

No, as said by someone else, you don't need to be concerned. Just mount the image from your actual Windows and there Office will be able to open these files (in read only mode).

Krusty... the Recovery Media will work just fine in most cases requiring no REGISTRATION information. The problem you may come across is the absence of special hardware drivers for certain systems as far as that one Recovery Media is concerned. Since it's built with standard Windows known hardware drivers AND with drivers unique to the system it was built on, that's the system it's most compatible with. When using it on another system, you may encounter the absence of drivers for things like special Network interfaces (if you need them) and possibly special RAID sub-system hardware drivers.

Your best bet, if you haven't already done so, is to build a PE10 version (Windows 10-based) of the Recovery Media for use with your many systems. The PE10 version contains the most robust collection of fully Windows supported hardware drivers of all the WinPE incantations. It should be fully functional in over 90% of the different hardware combinations you may want to use this Recovery Media on, especially if your SOURCE image media is either an internal HDD/SSD or a USB-connected external HDD/SSD. If it's a networked device, there may be some issues due to lack of the appropriate network driver.

I would just create that PE10 Recovery Media and try it on your other systems. If it can see both your SOURCE image media and any partition/disk you wish to target for restoration (no need to do any restorations or images)... you're good to go!

How big should the USB stick for the recovery media be? I have read quite a bit but cannot find that info.
I will be installing the paid version into win 7 and win 8 (not 8.1).
Would like to have a proper USB on hand when I start the installation process for Macrium.
Also, will the same PE serve for both OSs?
Thanks in advance for any info.

On Windows 7 my recovery media is ~ 200 MB in size.

Login123... the size depends on the PE<n> build you select when you build your stick. They range from about 200mB as Minimalist has stated to larger builds for PE10 (Windows 10-based) of about 500mB... they all fit on a CD without issue.

Since it's pretty hard to find UFDs that small these days, I don't think you have an issue.

You might give some thought to sizing your UFD Recovery media so that images may be taken directly to that media, if necessary... there's nothing that inhibits that function that I know of (I've done it many times using a separate folder for images on the Recovery Media itself).

Great! Thank you Mr. Frog. :)

Yeah, the Recovery Media I created was WinPE 10, so all should be good. Both machines have their own external HDDs for backups which I've been doing backups to using SSR-2013 Recovery Disks, which was working fine, just a PITA booting to CD each time I run backups. Unfortunately SSR-2013 isn't compatible with Win10.

    Thanks again. Deeply appreciated.

I thought I would try adding the recovery boot menu to see if I liked using it, but when I tried to add it I got the message "An error occurred while unmounting the WIM". I get the same error message with both the PE 5 & PE 10 WIMs! Recovery using a boot disk (with either PE) works fine (albeit it's pretty slow booting up).

Any idea what my problem unmounting the WIM might be ?

If you run an antivirus, try temporarily disabling it.

While we're talking about the recovery boot menu.
Has anyone ever run into problems using it?
Have you ever had any boot problems? Does it remove it completely if you uninstall Reflect without first removing the menu?

Did that and I still get the error message - "An error occurred while unmounting the WIM" (when trying to add recovery boot menu). o_O

In the past, Macrium has recommended such, if needed, in the RELEASE NOTES. In the case of this release, no such recommendation is offered.

I tend to redo the Recovery Environment. Doesn't take any time so why not.

Pete, when you mention the recovery environment I guess you refer to the boot manager, right? I agree, does not take much time to update that. If we are talking about rescue media and mean burning CD, I am not keen on constantly burning another cd if I don't need it.

    beethoven,

I think Pete is referring to the rescue media. You can create a bootable UFD instead of a CD, image the UFD with your BIBM and then use the UFD for something else. If you need to use rescue media in the future, restore the image to the UFD.

But a rescue media update hasn't been suggested this time.

Just had a new version V 6.1.1309 come up today. Of course, being a loyal follower, installed it.

I turned on my external drive and the program crashed. I found that while playing around the program did not crash if I brought up the program when the external drive was off.

Just wondering if others experienced this. I guess you haven't since I seem to be special.:(

    Hello,

Macrium may have pulled the 6.1.1309 update as it is not showing there anymore. The site is back to the previous version 6.1.1225...
