I would just like to share what I have found out about my LinkSys router. There are firmware downloads that are freeware and implement honeyd tarpit features in them. This means you can turn your LinkSys router into a router/tarpit. The firmware also adds tons of other neat features like the ability to change signal output and run scripts on your router. Here is a link to the authors website:

Make sure you download the firmware for your router. The links below are for WRT54G and WRT54GS.

Here are links to there most current firmware (I recommend Alchemy pre v5.3 as it is more stable than 5.4):

Note: You have to read in sveasoft's forums to find out that there firmware has a tarpit built in. To edit the tarpit options you have to know a lot about GPL or unix, but I doubt you will need to configure it as it works as is. The author stated that this tarpit can turn a normal portscan on your router into a day long process due to the way the tarpit responds.

To install you just log into your router settings via your browser and goto Administration/Firmware upgrade and point to the .bin file. Make sure you dont interupt the update process.

I'm sure a lot of people already knew about this, but I just found out and wanted to share.

I posted this in the firewall section because of the tarpit functions.

For anyone who doesn't know what a tarpit is check out http://labrea.sourceforge.net or www.honeyd.org

Update: You can also check out Firewall Builder at www.fwbuilder.org
They have a nice program that allows you to create custom rules and create a firewall with them. Here is a link to using Firewall Builder with the Sveasoft firmware I listed above that shows step-by-step instructions to install the firewall on your router:

You can get the PuTTY files the author mentions in his tutorial here:

Edit: I just finished all of this and would like to say that it works beautifully :D
