hi, ads are tags (like textfiles) scanning programs put in to remember the status of the scanned files. so the next time it will scan faster cause it can read directly from the tags. but it has his weaknesses too.

let say kaspersky scanned my machine and putted all the tags on my files. three weeks later and A LOT UPDATES LATER TOO :D I want to scan again but with the new signatures the tags are outdated and it should scan normally without the tags.

As new definitions are released every day (or hour even) aren't the tags instantly out of date o_O

in fact, have you seen the speed of kav home? it doesn't effect that much imho. it is supposed to speed up the scan time on demand , I am not sure if it is for on access too. but like I said, this is a major flaw if you ask me.

gdata nor boomerang doesn't use this things (and I am very happy to see that, besides all the bad things...)

Regarding ADS-tags, i think it's case of "much ado about nothing", and calling them "a major flaw if you ask me" if you not sure what they are used/good for, is not quite fair. ;) :)
But it also shows that kaspersky has not been good enough in communicating to us,the users, what the purpose of the tags are.
The bottom line is that on my box Kav 5.0 runs smoother (faster if you want) than 4.5 did :)

Don, didn't want to start this but isn't this a flaw that they will not scan files if the tags show 'clean/safe or so" but in the meantime they have been updating for a week. what if that person had a virus that kaspersky could not find cause they had the update some days later?

    a link to ads tags/streams:

    http://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/ShowCode.asp?txtCodeId=47299&lngWId=1

I know what it is and there is no problem in doubting once in a while, it keeps me sharp :D
