Interesting Error

25/11/2007 20:07:54 - During execution of Personal firewall on the computer STUDIO, the following warning occurred: An error occurred while starting proxy server. Checking of application protocols (POP3, HTTP) will not work.

Errrr I'm running EAV not ESS so why the firewall error?

 

Further investigation shows POP3 and ZIP file scanning of HTTP is not taking place after this error. Suspect this error was caused by terminating ekrn.exe when it was using 100% CPU which a virus could easily do. Possible security hole of V3, terminating ekrn.exe stops proxy checking? Might also be present in ESS.

I remember well that I also encounteded this problem with the beta2 and RC1 (once ekrn.exe is terminated local proxy function stopped working) but since the public commenrcial release I am no longer seing this .

Why don't you reinstall making sure you have the very latest version:

1. Download fresh new Eset v3 product from http://www.eset.com/download .
Make sure that you choose the correct version.
2. Uninstall your current version from Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs
3. Reboot the computer when prompted
4. Delete manually these folders:

- C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application data\Eset
- C:\Documents and Settings\your user\Application data\Eset
- C:\Documents and Settings\your user\Local Settings\Application data\Eset

5. Reinstall your ESET smart protection with the file you just downloaded . Use typical install.

 

Thanks I was using .566 but installed it as an Upgrade will re-test by terminating ekrn.exe after a fresh install. Will report back.

 

Terminating ekrn.exe spawns a new process of ekrn.exe and proxy seems to remain in tact after successfully stopping EICAR in HTTP zip format and POP3. SO looks like a fresh install fixed it unless the 100% CPU problem had something to do with it, will keep an eye and update this thread if it occurs again.
