    Hello,

Note that if the back-up and verification completed succesfully, it log entry should end with these two lines:
    Code:
[6/8/2014 10:29:57 AM] Operation Completed with Error Code 0
    [6/8/2014 10:29:57 AM] Stop

    Thanks.
I also found the log in the settings.

I am guessing the email error must have caused it.
Does anyone know how to set up the email to work properly with Outlook.com?

    Hello,

The main thing is your image finished with no issues which is good, but I cannot tell you why the GUI disappeared. As to the email error, I have never used that option so I cannot help you with that (but I am sure someone else will)...

    Thanks.

I have removed the email setting until someone can offer any info.

    Do you always validate?

I found this TeraByte article that states that IFW doesn't natively support sending emails to a server that requires SSL.
It also states that you can install Stunnel to achieve it, but I am not going to mess around with that for an email. :isay:

i don't bother with validating anymore.
this program is as reliable as the sun will rise tomorrow.

it has *never* failed for me in hundreds of image creations and restores.

    IFW
    IFW or the Sun? :p

Seriously though, I wouldn't know how many backups/restores I've made over the last few years that I've been using IFW but I do know that it has been perfect for me as well (so I too have stopped 'wasting my time' validating IFW backups). :thumb:

Validation is mainly a test of whether your hardware will be able to restore the image. So you can have a "perfect" image that fails to restore because you have bad RAM. Replace the bad RAM and the image will restore.

How often should you check your hardware with image Validation? That's up to you.

    Wow.

You guys are certainly giving IFW a good endorsement. Although, I do find that it is slower to make images than Reflect.
I might remove the validation from my schedule.

    Do I just remove the /v ?

    Hadron,

Imaging speed depends mainly on backup compression. Are you using Standard Compression? I suggest "Enhanced Speed - A". It can be twice as fast. Most of us use this compression.

If you don't want to use Validation, remove the ticks in the Options window. ( or /v or /vb in a batch file)

Edit... Enhanced Size - C (maximum compression) can be ten times slower than Enhanced Speed - A.

    Hi Brian.

I do backups on a schedule, and this is what IFW put in the schedule Run field:

Where do I find the compression settings?

OK, add this to your batch file. (or Run field) Then you will have Enhanced Speed - A compression.

    /comp:14

From the GUI, the compression levels are on the right hand side of the Backup Options window. Drop down menu.

Edit... If you aren't backing up to a USB HD you can add this to your batch file...

    /nousbpwrfix

IFW will open ten seconds earlier.

I have just been reading the manual about compression. It is not real clear what is faster.

There is only one compression I use. Enhanced Speed - A. It is the fastest.

Am I able to get IFW to run as soon as possible if the schedule was missed?
I have noticed in the Task Scheduler settings that:
"Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" is grayed out when the Configure For is set to: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP or Windows 2000.
If I change it to Windows 8.1, it doesn't display the GUI.

If you look at Nick's reply over at the Macrium Forum, he explains the differences with the "Configure For" options.

This is how I setup a Scheduled Task from a batch file...

Let's say your batch file is full.cmd (or full.bat)

Open Task Scheduler and click Task Scheduler Library on the left and Create Basic Task on the right.

    Name ... Full image
    Daily, weekly, whatever
    Time
    Start a Program
    Browse to full.cmd or full.bat
Put a tick in Open the Properties dialog for....
    Finish
Tick in Run with highest privileges
    Configure for Windows 8.1
Conditions tab, put a tick in Wake the computer to run this task
(This is optional) Settings tab, Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed
    Click OK

    Or below........Summary

    General tab
    ..Name the task
..Tick in Run with highest privileges
..dot in Run only when user is logged on
    ..select Configure for Windows 8.1
    Triggers tab
..click New and select Daily, weekly, whatever, Time
    Actions tab
    ..Action... Start a program
..click New and Browse to full.cmd or full.bat, Open, OK
    Conditions tab
..put a tick in Wake the computer to run this task
    Settings tab
..(This is optional) select Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed
    Click OK

That should wake the computer from sleep and run the backup. The IFW GUI is visible.

If you use the IFW Schedule method it defaults to "Run whether user is logged on or not". This prevents the IFW GUI from being seen. Simply change to "Run only when user is logged on" and the GUI will be seen.

    Thanks.

Can I just run the batch that I posted above?
How do you work with your batches? Where do you put them?
And what's the difference to just running it directly from Task Scheduler?

Also. Do you see the GUI when you run your batches, or does it run in the background?
From my findings, "Configure for Windows 8.1" makes it run in the background.

Edit: I just noticed the last line in your post.

    Sure.

Instead of clicking Schedule Command on the IFW Options windows, I click Show Command, Save to File and create a batch file. I put other lines in the batch file so I find it more convenient to create a batch file and then schedule it. You can store the batch files anywhere. OS or non OS partition.

That's fine. Run the batch file manually or run the Scheduled Task. Same backup result. You can run a Scheduled Task manually without opening Scheduled Tasks....

IFW has a /hide switch but I don't use it. Page 128 in the userguide. I like seeing the GUI although I set the batch file to run IFW minimized. (/min) Then I can have a quick look if I feel like it.

I just tested Enhanced Speed - A Compression, and the file size is almost the same size but about a third of the time from the standard setting.
They should make that the default.

I am beginning to get to know this program better now and am glad I persevered with it.

    Just one other question.
My scheduled task no longer appears in the IFW Scheduled Tasks tab.
Is there any way to get that back in there? No problem if I can't.

I just added /min to the end. Working.
