I've been consistently getting the search-town homepage despite my best efforts to change it. Every time I reboot, it resets to the search-town page. I also get a ton of adult pop-ups. Ad-Aware has not solved the problem, but I have scanned several times and just did it again in accordance with step 1 of your recommendations.

    Here is my Hijack Log:

    Hi dserlin,

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://approvedlinks.com/sp.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = http://riviera.cc (obfuscated)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys] regedit -s sysdll.reg

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winlogon] c:\windows\winlogon.exe

    Download and run: http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe
Use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    sysdll.reg
c:\windows\winlogon.exe <= NOTE: Only that one, do NOT try to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe (the real Windows file)

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter, everything has worked to perfection so far. My only problem is that I cannot reboot in Safe Mode. When I boot up it doesn't offer me an option for safe mode. Do I need to hit a key to get this option?
