I think that it a known Internet syndrome. Not unlike the one where the afflicted person has a need to download & test every freeware security program they can find. There is no known cure.
Oh . . . Oh i KNOW! That one is called the WSS, Wilders Security Syndrome. I discovered it, for any further diagnosis please contact me*. *Fees may apply
The "cure" is consistent disappointments with updates. That's what "cured" me from always updating drivers at least. lol.
Definitely, there's no one better than me for that job. You can contact me directly*. *Fees may apply Back when i built my PC i was so excited that i constantly updated and tested beta/stable drivers (Benchmark, gaming etc.) after one year i got bored of it because during all this time it only improved a couple FPS, so i gave up and stopped wasting my precious time on this.
Option 5 - I check the changelog when I get a notification about updates but only install if it adds features/improvements that I want
I do it with my OS update ("update Tuesday"). I usually wait until the following Monday though. This gives them time to fix any bugs associated with the updates and patch their patches (as paradoxical as that sounds, it's been known to happen with Windows). I've yet to be compromised as the result of waiting an extra 6 days to update Windows. I'd say the odds are greater of breaking something by pushing an update prematurely. I was completely oblivious to this whole Firefox 13/Adobe Flash Player dilemma thanks to this approach, for example. I only learned of it now through browsing this forum. I update all of my stuff on this "Update Monday", restart my computer, run CCleaner to tidy things up, and defrag all partitions... the last of which being my OS partition, which I'll set up to boot-time defrag then shut down afterward. Then I'll unplug the power cord, turn off my modem & router as well, then give everything a fresh boot up. And then I'll not concern myself with any of it for another 30 days : )
As I check my New Posts in Wilders every day I see updates for my stuff sometimes just as they become available. Some I do right away, some I wait a few days to see if they caused any problems and then update.
It has multiple names. Get with the times. Newer is better. Planned obsolescence. In the case of operating systems and payware, it's called: Your wallet is dirty. Let me clean it out for you.
Some as soon as available, others after waiting a few days to see if someone else has had a problem, others very infrequently e.g 3+ months. Always make an image before updating, just in case...
That's one of several reasons I've made updating/installing an "admin only" task. Definitely beats rebuilding your system when an update or an install trashes it. No, it don't happen often, but once is too many times.
You make a very good case for your method of OS updating. I'm going to try to adhere to the same routine myself. Thanks for posting.
I try to set and adhere to a routine (something similar to luciddream's) but honestly speaking, most of the times I break my own rules. I end up updating whenever I feel like it.
There was no option that matched how I update either. - I check for updates every now and then when I think of it (Filehippo Update Checker); - I update security programs (Sandboxie, MBAM Pro) immediately; - I update frequently used internet facing programs like Firefox and Adobe Flash when I know there's an update Otherwise I'm not fussed and only update things if I need to for security or function.
Usually I update software as fast as updates are released. I don't always keep them as newer isn't always better.
I update as soon as updates are available. I use a scheduled Filehippo scan to check for updates in combination with Secunia PSI.
