    I got this dotted box that never leaves around the volume level in Windows 7 Pro x64. Just started yesterday. Haven't made changes. Also this dotted box shows up in Adjust Screen Brightness dialog box when I move the slider but disappears when I select something else with the mouse. But the dotted volume box just stays no matter what. How do I get rid of these? And what's going on?

    zapjb, let's see if this works:

    Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use > Scroll down and De-select the Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys box. Click OK.

    Refresh desktop (right click > refresh) a couple of times. Try the Volume Level and/or Adjust Screen Brightness now.

    Good thought but that option is already deselected.

    Sounds like your keyboard has taken focus away from your mouse somehow. As simple as it sounds, try Alt+Esc and see if that works.

    The other only thing I can think of is to change your present Windows theme to something else, reboot, then change it back to what you were using, reboot, and hope that the dotted box has disappeared.

    No soap. Just hope this isn't a symptom of an OS problem to come.

    That box appears as you press Tab repeatedly to bring focus to an element. Try pressing Tab and see if it moves around.

    I don't understand why it's there without any interaction.

    I definitely know the volume slider was never ever surrounded by a dotted box. See the posted pic.

    I think you may be right, because once in a while this also happens to me on Win XP, sometimes it appears from out of the blue. On Win 8 this problem is even worse, I don´t know which idiot came up with this idea. Did you try the tweak in the link that I posted? :)

    @R187 I don't want to be right. I want a solution. :)

    I did not try that link as I am not sure about the origin of the download.

    @ zapjb

    Way back I tried a similar solution on Win XP, and it did fix most of the problem, but yes you should be cautious. ;)
