Everytime I reboot my homepage alters to this hxxp://%77%76%69%76%71%74%2E%74%2E%6D%75%78%61%2E%63%63/%68%2E%70%68%70?%61%69%64=579

The problem started last night when my browser was redirected here http://install.xxxtoolbar.com/ist/scripts/log_downloads.php?account_id=

Ran an av scan but my puter locked up and I had to do a ctrl alt delete. On start-up I went into msconfig and unticked

    Name Command

    xpsystem C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SERVICES\WMPLAYER.EXE
    PowerProf PowerProf.exe
    run= C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SERVICES\WMPLAYER.EXE (2 entries)

Theres another entry that I suspect is a problem but I havnt unticked it this
    sys regedit -s sys.reg

I managed to do a clean reboot and ran my AV. It came up with the following:

    c:\powerproof.exe is infected with PWSteal.Trojan
    c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PowerProf.exe is infected with PWSteal.Trojan
    c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mpr16.dll is infected with PWS.Hooker.Trojan
    c:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0066458.CPY is infected with Download.Trojan
    c:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0066799.CPY is infected with PWS.Hooker.Trojan
    c:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0066803.CPY is infected with PWS.Hooker.Trojan
    c:\_RESTORE\TEMP\A0066809.CPY is infected with PWS.Hooker.Trojan

I cleaned these rebooted and still my homepage was being changed.I shut down went in to safe mode and ran another scan which showed nothing. At reboot the problem was still there.Downloaded and ran adaware which showed nothing.Downloaded and ran spybot which found entries which I removed.Rebooted and still had the same problem.Downloaded and ran HiJack this...heres the log

First download CWshredder from either http://www.thespykiller.co.uk or https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=14086 then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Reboot After running cwshredder and as soon as possible follow this advice:
Now as CWS Hijacks are normally installed via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    then reboot &
Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R302 03.05.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Wow thanx for your concise and speedy reply bud.

The entry in msconfig --> regedit -s sys.reg was starting to rankle me and prior to seeing your reply deleted it.Things are working ok now and rebooting no longer results in my homepage being changed.

Would you advise me to follow the steps you outlined or as things are now ok leave well alone?

Once again thanx for your responce :)

    Hi paul756,

Make sure this one is gone:
    O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111157} - ms-its :mhtml:file://c:\nosuch.mht!http://petite-virgins.biz/dl/fox/x.chm::/load.exe
and get patched for that exploit, if you are not.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi paul756,

Nothing serious but you asked. :)

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...://my.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

    Then there are these:
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie.htm
    O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie2.htm

where it looks like you are using FlashGet. If that is true those can be fixed as well.

    Regards,

    Pieter
