I've recently been getting a rash of trojans being dectected by AVG. I've run both Ad-Aware 6 and Spybot. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi wildhare34,

First fix this with HijackThis :

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mswspl] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RunDLL] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll",Load

Then restart PC and remove :

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll <- this file

    About this entry :

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mswspl] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

Some WMP's (wmplayer.exe) are installed with a worm lately, that startup does not seem right, although the location of wmplayer.exe is correct. WMP should not autostart anyway.

My advice is to uninstall (remove) WMP and reinstall it from the official MS site. Click Here

Could you also tell the locations where AVG picked up the files?

    Thnx

    Cheers,

Hi Unzy and thank you for the quick response,

I have fixed the problems with HijackThis and deleted the file. I'm having problems removing WMP. It's not available in Add/Remove Programs and when I go in to manually delete from the file, it restores the files. Can I just install the new version on top or is there another method I'm overlooking?

The file that AVG finds the Trojan in is:

    C:\System Volume Info\_restore{2B91D93E-97C5-4C73-AFA9-9823-B8AC2C9E}1RP601A0002530.dll

    Thanks again.

    Ok,

The file AVG finds is in your system restore.

It's not actually running but if you would choose a syetem restore it could be activated again.

There's a simple sollution for that.

First I'd like you to do this :

    Find that C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

and can you please send this wmplayer.exe as an attachment to my email please?

    unzyATwilderssecurity.com (AT = @)

I wanna check it out first before we proceed

    Thnx!

    Cheers,

    Hi wildhare,

The file turned out to be ok

Yers you can just re-install on top of it

Can you post a fresh HijackThis log?

    Cheers,

    Ok thnx, looks good!

    Now finally do this :

Disable system restore and do a fresh reboot

After doing that enable system restore again

Here's how to enable/disable system restore for XP : Click Here

Your AVG should come up clean after doing so

Let us know whether all is well again

    Thnx

    Cheers,
