Hijack Log... and mysterious refresh noises. Please Check...

When online, my computer makes mysterious 'refreshing noises'. You know the sound the computer plays when you click on a link on the internet, or click refresh? That sound.

Well- mine keeps making that noise at random intervals, when I don't have any explorer windows open- so long as I'm connected to the net.

Sometimes it will make the window I'm working on 'inactive', but it doesn't make any other window active...

Every once in a while I'll get a warning 'ok' box window pop up. Twice it has said: 'You must click yes to continue' and once: AGB NICHT AKZEPTIERT

I have run spybot, adaware and spysweeper (but unupdated version as you have to pay to get latest def. updates). They found a few tracking cookies and fun things like that, but did not stop the clicking.

Interestingly enough, it only does this when I first go online, after a while of surfing it stops till next time I go on.

It's a Dell laptop, if it has any relevance.

Oh- and want to say I appreciate any help, since I'm only a noob member- it seems a bit rude to only post asking for help... so um 'hi!'

Log: (I have removed my full name where it appears once- other than that, this is the unedited result of a hijack this scan).

Just wondering what the rule is for bumping? This has fallen off the front page, so I bumped it... If there is a rule against this, please let me know and I won't do it again. Sorry and Thank you.

    Hey Ta-Yu,

I'm not sure of the poilcy on bumps but as we work thru your problem maybe more bumps want be necessary. The HJT log experts will be along to hopefully determine if you have any mysteries in your log.

AGB NICHT AKZEPTIERT=AGB DOES NOT ACCEPT ?

That's what I thought it translated to. But it didn't make any more sense to me in English... and thanks for the reassurence. My laptop is very precious to me (aside from having two years of my degree stored on her, she has served me well), and I hate it when things go wrong that I don't know how to fix.

    Hello Ta-Yu,

I would like you to start with this:

Open Internet Explorer. Then click on TOOLS in the top toolbar. Click on "Internet Options..." from the drop-down menu.
A new smaller window will display. Under the "General" tab, in the middle, are 3 buttons.
Click the Delete Cookies button - then a small warning box pops up. Click OK.
Click the Delete Files button - a small warning box pops us. Check the box for "Delete all offline content" and click OK.
Then on the same General tab, click Clear History, then click OK.

    Next,
    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
    3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
    4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
    5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
    6. A box will display the various files you can remove. Here are some safe examples:

    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin
    Temporary Files

    7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Next, run HJT again with all browsers closed and check these items and then on Fix:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cupdate] C:\DOCUME~1\OLIVIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\SFX38.tmp\cupdate.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bcray] C:\DOCUME~1\OLIVIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\SFX38.tmp\1002\bcray.exe

    O16 - DPF: {12B574CE-A702-E7AD-358C-597D3BCEA9FA} - http://www.mrketing.biz/IE_plugin.cab

Reboot the computer into safe mode

Make sure you can view all hidden files and folders

    Find and delete these files/folders:

    C:\DOCUME~1\OLIVIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\SFX38.tmp\cupdate.exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\OLIVIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\SFX38.tmp\1002\bcray.exe

Reboot and post a new log here.

Ok- I managed to do almost all those steps... The only part I couldn't do is use the disk cleanup tool. This is because each time I attempt to use it, the first time I try it gets stuck at the checking how much space would be saved by compressing files bit and never progresses, just keeps checking that forever, and if I close it and try again, it doesn't do anything- it's as if I hadn't clicked on the button. This same pattern happens each time I restart my computer- the first time the checking thing will load but get stuck, and the other times nothing will happen (till I restart).

I did empty the recycle bin manually...

Btw- can I/should I delete the backups hijack made of the things you told me to remove?

So here is the new log:

    Hi Ta-Yu,

Your log is clean now. Did this also solve your original problem?

First "unhide" hidden files and folders:
Launch My Computer from the Desktop Icon.
    Select View, Details.
    Select the Folders button.
Select Tools, Folder Options. Then select the View Tab. Select the Show hidden files and folders radio button is selected
and that the Hide file extensions for known file types check box is unchecked. Once this is done, select Apply and then
Like Current Folder (located near the top of the Folder Options box). Then select OK.

Then click Start > Run > type or copy&paste Local Settings > OK
This will open a folder with one Temp folder in it.
Open that folder and delete everything inside. (This might require you to boot into safe mode)

The backups made by HijackThis can be deleted once you are sure nothing important was Fixed by accident.

    Regards,

    Pieter

I can't tell immediately if the problem is fixed. The mysterious clicking noises have stopped for now, but they didn't happen all the time. I'll keep an 'ear' out, and see if they happen again.

Ok- am doing the clearing out of temp files. I cannot delete one gif thing, which means I cannot delete everything. It is located here: C:\Documents and Settings\Olivia Wood\local settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CTMN0LQB

    and called: network=ign&site=all&size=1x1&r=ht...

When I click on the file and hit delete, nothing happens. When I go back a few folder levels,a nd just try to delete the whole folder, I get: Cannot delete NETWOR~2.GIF: Cannot find the specified file.

    So er... what's going on?
Also, would anyone know why my disk cleanup would have stopped working?

    Hi Ta-Yu,

To clean out your Temp Internet Files try IE > Tools > Internet-options > General tab > delete files and put a checkmark in the confrimation box to include offline content.

DiskCleanup can seeem to take forever for many reasons. The most common is if there is a lot to clean up and you have not defragmented in a long time.
Which is why I explained how to clean out the most important folder (in this case) manually.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Done that... it's just that stray .gif that I can't get rid of manually... weird.

And its not so much disk cleanup takes a long time- it just doesn't work at all. I've defraged pretty recently, and with perfect disc, so it's a little neater than the normal windows effort.

Should I just not worry about disc clean up/that stray file, and assume everything is fixed?

And thanks very much for helping!

If the file you can't remove is really a .gif (no hidden extensions) I wouldn't worry about it.
As I said DiskCleanup is a overly sensitive utility and there are so many options we would probably just be wasting time.

But let us know how the refreshing sounds go, although I think Taz71498 hit the nail on the head and that should be solved.

    Regards,

    Pieter
