Hello. I spent a lot time to explore so that i post in the right forum. Apologies if the post is still in the wrong place. I use Sygate and was just sick and tired of a pop-up notification about Google Update trying to access the internet (Don't recall the exact message). Just ended up permanently blocking this exe. Q #1 I want to request your opinion regarding what this exe tries to do. I hope I do not end up loosing any searching functionality since I only use google to search for things and because I am not aware of any other search engine as good as google. Q#2 Can I request recommendation for some good search engines (other than microsoft's bing which I probably can not trust) Can you please share your views and recommendations. P.S Between MSFT and Google, I would trust Google
I like https://startpage.com. It includes a web proxy. There's removal advice re GoogleUpdate.exe at http://antivirus.about.com/od/windowsbasics/ht/googleupdate.htm.
What google software are you running? all you lose is the ability to get the latest update for that software as soon as it is available. Not something to be concerned about. edit: 2nd link in the post above summaries it well
GoogleUpdate.exe is installed by any items selected from Google Pack Including by not excluding Google Toolbar User Choice, but should be disabled from phoning home your surfing data via MSCONFIG I prefer Google over Bing as a search engine, though, this is stricly a personal choice, you may want to manage your cookie settings to suit. Regards,
Hi ysatis, Nice to see you again! I have Google Earth Only installed and get the same pop-ups as you and I just block it in Look'n'Stop Firewall it is a pain but it just checks for updates to Google Earth in my case I just check manually when I need to! HTH, TH EDIT: I missed to say this about the Google updater! At times I see that it tries to start another program such as my Bluetooth App & my Keyboard software which does not need to connect to the Internet so I block it via the firewall, so it is a real pain at times and Probably will remove Google Earth sooner rather than later!
Thanks everyone for your replies. It must have been due to a toolbar or something that i tried a long time back.
Happy to read the recommendations were useful to you. Let us know if we can be of further assistance. Regards,
