Specifically Windows 7 64 bit pro.

On XP I always used either CCleaner or the now defunct WindowWasher.

Windows 7 is different, it stores lots of data at lots of places.

The program doesn't have to cover 'everything', I'm just looking for something that is good.

What programs are easy to use, cover a lot and can be trusted ?
I always wonder why a free program is offered for free ...

The objective is reducing the amount of private data, it doesn't have to be 100 % forensics proof. At times it just makes sense to 'clean up' without actually restoring an image.

I think the best option is bleachbit. It has overwrite setting and custom location cleaning. Its open source, not to mention you can download a portable version from the main website. You can optionally download ccenhancer for added programs.

  4. CCenhancer + CCleaner
    Bleachbit
    Wise Disk Cleaner
    BCwipe
    Jetclean

those are the ones I use.

I'll research this myself at some point, but while I'm thinking of it and in case it is helpful to thread...

Do any of these tools include support for purging the Windows Event Log?

  6. CCleaner + CCenhancer should detect and delete WEL.
