I am trialling a load of personal firewalls, wondering what rules are needed for making firewalls MS workgroup lan friendly, that is to allow file/print sharing, remote desktop and connection through a hub/router (which for testing purposes will have the NAT disabled) ?

    Thanks

    Nick

    Hi Nick

File/printer sharing on the LAN can be done by permitting all traffic between systems on the LAN (allow subnet) or you could restrict this to specified systems with rules. When restricting to specific systems, you just have to remember to allow the broadcast traffic.

Remote desktop would require rules in the firewall and port forwarding on the router.

How to define these rules and port forwarding would depend on the software and hardware in place.

    Regards,
