Im currently behind a router and using windows xp sp2. Can anyone recommend a light firewall free or paid that will provide outbound protection? I have quite a good knowledge of creating rules etc so that wont be a problem.

I would say all application based firewall : Online Armor ( you can by default settings allow automatically network access to a trusted prog), Zone Alarm, Kerio 2 & 4, nearly all firewall integrated in a Security suite. MaB
Hello, Sygate, Kerio are easy to configure - relatively. Kerio 2.1.5 is the good ole workhorse. Kerio 4 is the new version ... So, the choice is entirely yours. Mrk
