ESS4 causes WinXP to hang on Thinkpad X60T

I have installed ESS4 on a Thinkpad X60 Tablet about 8 - 10 times with no luck. The install goes fine. Once I reboot, Windows (XP3) hangs at the Windows startup screen. I can go into safe mode, once I hold down the power button to shut it down. I have tried the following from the knowledge base:

    http://www.eset.eu/knowledge-base/a...t-to-OS-Win-because-your-PC-is-getting-frozen

    which did not help.

I have installed ESS4 and restored from backup at least 8 times now. The last time, rather than a restore from backup, I went to safe mode and uninstalled ESS4. I was then able to get back into Windows just fine.

My laptop has a standard install of WinXP, nothing unusual.

I have been emailing to ESS support but none of their suggestions have helped and I have not heard from them in over a week. I have a 3 machine license, have installed successfully on other Thinkpads with no problem.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Mike

Thanks for the suggestion. I installed it again, tried to reboot again, went to safe mode and checked all the logs, and cannot see anything out of the ordinary.

Maybe installing ESS in advanced mode and selecting Learning mode for firewall might help. I assume you're installing ESS 4.0.474, aren't you?

I confirmed I was downloading the latest version, and set up ESS in learning mode. This made no difference. I guess I can try the earlier version.

I downloaded version 3 and it runs fine on my laptop. Version 4 does not. Can anyone tell me how I can now upgrade back up to version 4?

    Hello,

When you originally installed ESET Smart Security v4.0 under Microsoft Windows XP, did you exclude the following files from being scanned?

    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AclpConfig.DAT
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\Archive_AccConnAdvanced.html
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AccConnAdvanced.html
If not, you may wish to re-try v4 with those objects excluded and see if that makes any difference.

    Regards,

    Hello,

Right now, it is just a semi-educated guess as I am not certain if that will resolve the issue. If it does, though, we can certainly ask ESET to create a knowledgebase article on the matter.

I have exactly the same problem. After installing ESS 4.2 or 4.0 the computer hangs at startup windows logo. In save-mode I uninstall ESS and the computer starts normaly.
For testing I installed ESS 3. This will work fine. After reinstall version 4, the same procedure.

    I try tomorrow this:
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AclpConfig.DAT
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\Archive_AccConnAdvanced.html
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AccConnAdvanced.html

    to exclude.

I hope, that this will help.

    Regards

I was never able to get version 4 to work, and never got help from ESET support to successfully install. I was (after a lot of trouble) able to uninstall version 4, then I installed version 3 which did work with the X60 Tablet. I eventually sold my tablet, which solved the problem :). Now however, I am about to receive an X60s so we will see how that goes. I would be curious to hear any success experience form anyone using ESS version 4 on a Thinkpad X6* series laptop.

BTW, I did try to exclude as suggested and this did not help:
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AclpConfig.DAT
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\Archive_AccConnAdvanced.html
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AccConnAdvanced.html

    Thanks
    Mike

    Exclude:

    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AclpConfig.DAT
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\Archive_AccConnAdvanced.html
    C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\AccConnAdvanced.html

Can't help, because folder and files does not exist.

B.T.W. I try to install NOD32 AV4 instead of ESS4. This makes NO different. Windows hang at startup.

My WinXP PC is a MSI 6309 board and Pentium III with 1 GHz.

    Hello,

Are you installing ESET Smart Security v4.2? It contains specific updates for compatibility with Lenovo's ThinkVantage software.

I'd suggest installing v. 4.2, creating a kernel memory dump per the instructions here at the moment the hangup occurs and conveying it to ESET for perusal. Just to make sure, does disabling automatic real-time protection startup and restarting the computer make the problem go away?

Marcos: I have done a mistake, because I forgot to press Ctrl + Scroll-Lock.
    So no dump-file was create.
In the following I started in save mode and open the registry editor by setting this:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ehdrv and set 'start' to '2'

    It was a "1" before!
After shutdown, the sytsem startup normaly.
So I think, it's no problem and start wile pressing F8 in savemode.
The HKLM I set back to "1" and restart. Now I was wait for the hang at startup to press Ctrl-Scroll-Lock.
But now the system starts normaly! It never hangs although the parameter now is standing at "1" again.
I have no declaration for this Windows XP/ESS4 behavior .

Back again. I force the fault, so I erase all files at the folder WINDOW\PREFETCH.
After restart it hangs again. So I press Ctrl and for 2 time Scroll-Lock.
    But no file was created.
Then the same procedure (save-mode, setting the "2" in registry, restart.. a.s.o.).

However the OS store in a prefetch-file how to load in memory and if it is setting "2" the file is save on HD. After resetting to "1" the file will not be update and Windows starts without hang at startup.

    Regards
