For example, does NOD32 scan two files at the same time on a dual-core processor, to speed up the scan ?

Who says it has to scan two files simultaneously? Running two threads on single file for different scan operations is also an option, probably more realistic one than simultaneous scan of different files on 2 cores.

I was just using that as an example. I wanted to know if the scan engine has been optimized in any way to fully support multi-processor (ie. 2 or more) systems (ie. so that the scan speed will increase with more processors)

I would say that NOD will scan a file at a time, but the dual processors will help speed the scan speed, and also remember that scan speed is not everything, personally I would rather have a AV that would do a proper thorough scan and do its job.
