Humble prediction... very few respondents will declare that they use default configurations. The "tweak" category will prevail, to the extent that a subset of poll questions might be, "How much do you tweak the settings?". Some of us max out heuristics and others don't. Some of us turn off certain features or increase their sensitivity, or do custom installs wherein we choose which components are allowed onto our systems. avast!, for example, has 7 shields... 5 of which are configurable. It seems to me to be mainly a question of how far in (to the Tweak Myriad) would you like to go?
I too agree with you in my case(currently testing avira) I have set guard and on-demand scanner to HIGH heuristics and also mostly keep my Web Guard Off during downloading
No I disable scanning network media/mapped drives. When it comes to protection settings otherwise, yeah it's default.
No, since I do not want my browser and my computers to slown down and I set Heuristic as lower While my personal firewall is set to the high protection. I practice a safe surfing and my browser is sandboxed, my systems are fully up to date and before installing a new software I check it with several antimalwares (usually: NOD32 or GData or Avira + a-squared free, MalwareBytes' AntiMalware and PREVX), then I try it in a virtual environment first.
KIS 2010. (Interactive Protection) "select action automatically" deselected and "password protection" enabled.
Tweak, most of the times i set it to the highest possible. if it starts to annoy me, i lower it. But the lowest i could go is default
Here, I tweaked some settings of Microsoft Security Essentials: - Turned the Scan Type to Full scan in Scheduled scan tab; - Checked Scan removable drives in Advanced tab; - Changed to Advanced Membership in Microsoft SpyNet tab.
Not to get into semantics, but for the purposes of this poll I should consider DefenseWall, or any HIPS, as resident anti-malware. DefenseWall is after all marketed as "the most reliable protection against malware such as viruses, spyware, and rootkits" (SoftSphere press release).
I dont use an AV or any other scanners. When I did,I ran Avira, set the settings to expert config, settings on high and never had any issues or FP's,like people like to post about on these forums
Actually it's not me who's getting annoyed, if it was me all my security software would be at MAX! I never feel a slowdown and it gives you a better feeling Pc is fast enough too But my bro complains, and i gotta lower it or he will remove it
AV with Default settings. But now im not using any Realtime protection bcoz they tweak my computer to slowest performance.
First of all - common AM/AS and AV on the market are based-on blacklists mechanism softwares - DW does not and this is one of the biggest advantages of this software. Second - almost all AM/AS and AV are in Detection layer of protection while DW is in Prevention security layer.
I use my AV on demand only (the scanner is tweaked though), to scan files that I decide to keep from shadow sessions. Even though most AVs nowadays have less system impact, my computer is definitely faster without any active guard.
Boost, if you want to keep something from Sandboxie or Shadow Defender, how do you know whether it is malicious or not?
Most things I want to keep that I may download, only include an avi video or mp3 usually. If anything else,I'll use virustotal. Have never been infected,so I must be doin things right somehow
I'll have to agree with you, I have never witnessed an attempt to infect my computer when browsing. One of the members, Longview (he hasn't posted for quite a while) was well known to run his computers "only" with Shadow Defender and ShadowProtect. I do keep Avira on demand mainly because of USB flashdrives which are very often infected, but in earnest I really can't see all the malware that some people seem to complain about. On the other hand my father in-law's computer was so infected that I had to clean it with a CD, as no scanner could even start. How did he get his computer so infected, it is a mystery to me.
